Scavenger Pets
I don't have a yard so I walk my dog (choc lab) a lot, and she is CONSTANTLY with her nose to the ground scavenging for garbage or food to eat on the sidewalk/street. At least once per walk I have to pull something out of her mouth. One time it was a dead squirrel
She does this whether she's walked before or after eating...she's 1 1/2 and we broke of her habit of eating rocks (!) where shell spit them out but anything compostable she goes for immediately and swallows.
Does anyone else's dogs do this? I wonder if she'll ever grow out of this or always do it b/c it's her nature as a breed. But I think she's gotten sick a few times from eating something rotten on the ground.

Re: Scavenger Pets
I have a black lab (2 1/2 years) and it must be there nature......he's the most annoying dog to take for a walk (although i love him dearly)....he eats anything he can...for a while it was rocks which if he couldnt poop them out he was throwing them up constantly and now his new thing is eating grass...he looks like a cow when we go for a walk like hes grazing in a field...his nose is constantly to the ground looking for something...im hoping he'll eventually grow out of this phase but im not sure...lol

I can totally see this. Luckily I think labs have strong stomachs...but I just hate having to pull dead animals or half eaten garbage out of my dog's mouth!!

Re: Scavenger Pets
My black lab used to eat everything... not only on walks or in the yard...but he walked right up to the wall in the kitchen and ate it.... wall paper, sheet rock and all.
He did grow out of it, but he was about 6 years old..
