Who even comes up with this stuff?!?!?
Did someone actually see this child and say to themselves, "hey, he looks like he's shooting a gun. We better make him stop that!" Ridiculous

Re: School asks deaf 3yr old to change the way he signs his name

Just angering! I grew up immersed in the deaf culture and they are often regarded as second class citizens. It is his name! There are many signs that put your hands in a 'weapon like' position. Hell, the letter 'L' is exactly how every child typically makes a gun at that age. It's your freaking fingers and hands. And it's done so quickly. Argh! Now I'm worked up. Chat Icon

As noted in several comments at the end of the article - we can't get gun control but we can go after a deaf 3 year old who looks like he is pointing a gun when he signs his name...yea I'm a proud American Chat Icon

Everyone knows that sign language is just a gateway to real guns.....

Just imagine if Tim Gunn was in school now.... they would force him to change his last name!

This is completely and utterly ridiculous.

What a waste of school time and resources.

I can see where they are coming from..they way they sign it, obviously it looks like a gun shooting people, but it's pretty ridiculous. That's his name

There are a limited number of hand positions and gestures possible with only 5 fingers. There are going to be signs that look like something else. Some signs will look like curses in other languages (similar to the middle finger), the "a" and "s" is a closed fist, which is a sign of aggression, "h" is a gun symbol, as is "l". Is the school going to have to approve each and every sign that he uses?

Re: School asks deaf 3yr old to change the way he signs his name

It's not his fault he is deaf, and I'm sure when his parents named him they didn't think of what it might look like in sign language.

He knows one "language" (signing exact english) while the school wants him to learn it through ASL because they think the way he does it looks like a gun.

I'm sorry, but I still think they are over reacting and being ridiculous.
