Re: school district responsible for bullying?
I understand kids are cruel and you can't stop them for tormenting each other completely - But really? WHY was there never any sort of disiplinary action taken against these kids who have been physically assaulting this poor kid ?? They're doing it ON school grounds, in places where teachers and administrators MUST have been present (the school dance?)

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
I actually got tears in my eyes when I read about how they hit him in the head with a rock and gave him a concussion...that poor boy
I actually went to that school & it angers me to no end that the school administration let it get this bad. They didn't tolerate behavior that was 1/2 as bad way back when I went there - W.T.F. happened?!?

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
You know, evem though I was, myself, somewhat of a "teacher's pet," , I STILL remember teachers and administrators at my high school bantering with and being flattered by attention they got from the "meran" "cool" kids. Does anyonr know what I mean? No one, including the adults LIKED these entitled, diomineering, self-important kids, but it was almost like some of the adults just couldn't resist being flattered and amused by them....That's how a lot of bad stuff gets condoned.

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
I'm still thinking about this. Know what else saddens me? That the bullies have SO much aggression! WHY? Where are their parents? There have to be signs at home that these kids are so aggressive...I doubt that it just manifests itself at school
Kudos to Paul for being so brave & coming forward. I was happy to read that despite this horror/mess he's made a few more friends that now have his back...

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
It breaks my heart how cruel kids can be. I feel like the school environment is deteriorating so fast. I am 32 and there was maybe one bully throughout my school years. There was no violence like this article and that video speak to.
I worry for our children....
edited to say - I also am a firm believer in 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease'. Attending and speaking at school board meetings is a must.

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
We handle bullying complaints ALL the time in our office. Basically, YES, the school is on the hook as long as they are on notice of the bullying. Notice can be as simple as a solitary teacher witnessing the bullying on one occasion, or the student and/or parent reporting it to someone.
EVERY school is required to have procedures in place for investigating these kind of matters. If they fail to follow the proper procedures, then yes, they are responsible for their failure to intervene.
In fact, I'm coming down VERY hard on a District right now for mishandling reports of sexual harassment/bullying.

Re: school district responsible for bullying?
It's so sad. I think sometimes school districts just dont care about the "social" aspect involved...or they just dont care. They use the excuse that it's solely their job to educate our children...
We are trying to implement a BEST BUDDIES program in Smithtown School District and the principal at Accompsett Middle School said NO...

I think this is horrible. I'm glad he defends himself though and spoke out about what was going on. And his parents are smart to document everything.

I think the pack mentality has a lot to do with bullying behavior. These kids probably aren't very aggressive at home and have parents with "Not My Child" syndrome.

ITA. I admit that's it hard to "prevent" all incidents to happen in the first place but once an incident is reported it is the school system's responsibility to fix it asap. Not just hoping it will stop! In this instance it was 12. Come on!!!
DS will be in school at some point. I entrust my child to be in their safety.
I still remember the case of those boys that were assaulted (I don't bullying would be the correct term!!!!) at the football camp.
Bullying is not fun. It's only fun for the attackers. Bullying is agression and assault and should be punished as such.
