School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I am going to register DD for kindergarten this week, and I just found out that the public school started using a dress code this year. Black, white or red polo shirts and khaki, black or grey pants/skirts. No cute outfits...

I dont have to worry about this yet, but think its a great idea. It helps kids not keep up with the joneses, also put more focus on school work and activities. Less, i have these uggs, and coach bag. Jmo.

Yay. Mean girls not playing with another because of stupid things like the wrong clothes can start in K. It's sad. I sometimes wish our school had a dress code to cut out some of the nonsense.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I get that dress codes have the potential to mitigate certain propensities to 'tease' others about their clothes or the brands they wear.. but it doesn't eliminate it. There will still be "Her khaki's are too short, his shirt has a stain, she doesn't wear the right barettes, he doesn't have an alligator on his shirt.. " Materialism is not something you can force out with a dress code. That work is on the parents.
I like dressing my kids. I like picking colors that suit their skin tone and graphics that highlight their personality. I have never been one to appreciate homogeny so I would probably be disappointed if the school felt that it would be necessary to tell me how to dress my own children.
BUT.. if the school did determine a dress code was necessary it wouldn't distress me enough to 'fight it'.
So.. I guess I'm in the middle leaning toward no dress code.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
Since moving is not really an option, I don't have much of a choice. As the mom to a little girl who already has an opionion about everything she wears, I'm not sure how I'm going to make this work. I understand why school chose to do this, but I don't agree with it, and I'm not happy about it. All the cute clothes in the stores...and I can't buy any of it except for weekend wear

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
My gf sends her kids to a school with a dress code like that and she loves it.
From me? I send my kids to a school where they wear plaid uniforms so I am all for a dress code! I actually would prefer the dress code to the uniform, but either way, I am fine with it.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I LOVE it.... wish our district had a dress code. I have a kindergartener and a 2nd grader... both boys, and its not just "mean girls", some of the boys are pretty mean themselves.
No daily battles over what to wear, no running late in the morning because someone can't find something to wear. I wish more districts did this.
ETA: I understand the whole "individuality" thing, truly, I do... however, school is not supposed to be a fashion show. And for the children whose families cannot afford to dress them up in "all the cute outfits" that ths stores are carrying, a dress code, or "uniform" can be a GODSEND.

Huge fan of a dress code. I would not be disappointed at all if our district implemented one.

Ditto! My nephew goes to Catholic school and I'm so jealous that there isn't a daily battle on what to wear with him every morning!

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
we have school uniform and LOVE it as does my kid. i have never heard one complaint from any of the kids. It's khaki docker pants, knee length khani skirts and knee length shorts. White, Red and or Navy polo shirts, White, Brown or Black shoes/sneakers, White, Red or Nsvy hair accessorie. No jewelery. Clothes must be pressed and clean at all times (shirts tucked in and shoes always looking new). School logo is on shirts, outerwear and sweaters.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I would love this...no late mornings fighting about what she will or won't wear, no coming home and asking for ridiculous things because 'everyone else is wearing it', no distractions from schoolwork because of what people are or aren't wearing...I think uniforms are a great idea.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I don't have girls, so that might affect my answer, but I would kind of like it.
The only thing that makes me nervous is having enough of the right clothes cleaned. I would have to over buy so i didn't have to go crazy with laundry.

NAY. I think it's fine for private school but not for public.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
Having experienced both I'd say in an elementary school
no dress code is easier.
You dont' have to maintain a school supply of clothes & a separate supply of normal clothes for your children.
I'm sure when it comes to middle school & high school, it may be easier when they become more label conscious.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
One advantage would be that you don't have to deal with the what do you want to wear that is such a PITA in my house.
I thought that public schools could not force a dress code, but they could suggest one.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
As far as the schools by me go with the "dress code" it is a recommendation and not all children have to wear it.
My friend teaches in a district like that and she said it's a little over half that actually follow it.
It's a public school, they can't dictate what color clothes, style etc you buy for your child. IMO.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
I went to private school and public school...we had very little money so designer was out.
It definitely was a stressful sting and a constant reminder that I did not have keds or the guess triangle on the back of my jeans.
uniforms all the way.

Re: School dress code...YAY or NAY?
Megan has to wear the gym uniform every day next year for Kindergarten. Sweats and the school t shirt in the fall and the sweatshirt in the winter. I am SO HAPPY! They have random dress down days for the school, usually around holidays, so she will wear her cute outfits then. I am SO HAPPY. It will be SO MUCH EASIER! I cannot wait!
