School email addresses ETA another question...
Just curious, does everyone have an email address through their school? If so, what do you use it for?
For example, to communicate with other teachers, administrators, parents, students?
Thanks!
ETA: Wow! A lot of you do use email to communicate with parents.
My district has email but it is optional. We use it internally. We can use it to communicate with directors and other administrators or other teachers. Directors are required to give us hard copies of memo and etc... also in case people don't get to check their email that often.
One more question, those of you that communicate with parents via email, did your union object to this at first?

Yes, we get our weekly agendas on them. I wanted to kind of keep it private but someone gave it out on the open house we had for my class. And since I can't change my password, I've been blocked from it all summer.

Re: School email addresses
Yes.
I give it to parents because, at least on the high school level I find it easier. Most don't bother.
1. I have way over 100 students and can't sit on the phone with a parent for 15 minutes over a very quick issue.
2. I have a computer on my desk but the faculty only share two phones down the hall in the faculty room.
3. There is no "he said/she said" game. I have the entire conversation in writing with time and date stamp. They can't go over my head saying I said something I didn't say.
That being said I keep my e-mails very brief and only stick to objective, factual language... nothing that can be interpreted differently.
EX. Just to inform you your son, John Smith, did not hand in his take home essay when it was due this morning at the beginning of third period, therefore....

Same here, but don't give it to parents or students.

My school is like this too, I give parents my e-mail too. I sometimes find it easier to communicate with them through e-mail then over the phone.

Same here. All the teachers and administrators communicate via e-mail. I also give out the address to students and parents. My school has its own website. Basically everyone has an e-mail with there first name, last initial and the abbreviation of the school following it. The parents and students can find a teacher's e-mail by going on the school website even if I did not give it to them. My school is a 6-12 grade school. When the students reach 9th grade they use a lot of technology and we make sure that every student has a school e-mail address.

school email --> strictly professional contact between teachers and administrators. We are not permitted to exchange emails with parents - and I would NEVER give my email to students. NOT appropriate.

Re: School email addresses ETA another question...
We contact each other through e-mail. It makes things easier. I also have an e-mail address specifically for students and parents. It is separate from all my other e-mails and makes contacting parents easier. With 100+ students it is difficult to contact parents by phone. Students also use my e-mail to turn in papers if they are unable to print them out.

Re: School email addresses ETA another question...
alot of teachers object to the email. Our union says to use it b/c the administration is emailing u important notice
this email is through the school
some parents got the address and emailed me
when i do email parents it is factual info. I only will give out hw, or test scores or avg at the moment. any other issues i then type
"Please call the office so we can discuss this further"
if i dont hear from them I call them
NEVER PUT TOO MUCH IN WRITING.
but sometimes a parent justs wants an update on their kids progress....which I give and i do not go into details about behavior....i would call them for that

Re: School email addresses ETA another question...
I encourage parents to email me - I find it so much easier than a phone call, since I'm rarely by a phone at the same time they are. And I hate talking to people on cell phones while they're in line at the store, which is usually when I can get in touch with them. I also give the address out to students so that they can email me if they have a question or need something clarified once they're home. Or if they're absent and would like to know what they've missed. I don't give out my personal email address, only the school email. It's never been abused. I see no problems with giving your email address out to parents OR students.

Interesting! It took us a while for our union to be ok with the internal school emails. And like I said it is still optional.
The administrators are technically supposed to give the teachers a hard copy of whatever they send in case you don't get to check your email during the day. (Sometimes it is difficult b/c of sharing classrooms and etc...).

This is how we work it too! It is interesting how other districts do things.
I can't imagine the day when our union is ok with us emailing parents. I understand the convenience as a HS teacher the availability of phones is quite slim and I never call from my cell.
