School Nurse
DD is in kindergarten and told me tonight at bedtime that her whole class went to the nurse today and she checked their ears and eyes. She also said that she put drops in her eyes and she was blinded!!! but now she was fine and she couldnt read the letter E but then she did....I know a bit jumbled but this is basically how she relayed it to me.
So is this standard in schools - nurse checks out classes during out the year?
Should the nurse be calling me if she thinks there is a problem with DD's eyes?
Is this normal to be putting drops in her eyes without I knowing it?
I was just a little taken aback as I am usually the one taking care of DD's health and this seems weird to me somehow.
Thanks

Re: School Nurse
I know the nurse checked every class in our school for lice.
Pretty sure she conducted hearing and vision checks as well, but I might be wrong about that. No drops, they both would have been complaining about that.

Re: School Nurse
Typically elementary schools check their hearing and vision, which i think is totally unnecessary because they are supposed to be screened at their annual physicals.
I personally would give the nurse a call and ask about the whole eye drops thing. I don't think they should be putting anything in their eyes!!!

Not every child gets an annual physical, even though they should.
OP, I've never heard of giving drops! If there is a concern, they will let you know.

Re: School Nurse
They get screened every year by the nurse even though they have to go through a hearing & vision test every year.
I'm surprised about the drops though. I would definitely call & see what is the scoop.

Re: School Nurse
Yes --- they do routine screening. I believe it is required by NYS law. Not every parent brings their child to annual checkups, and not every doctor gives hearing and vision tests at annual physicals. My pediatrician has never tested my DD's hearing or vision, and she is 6 years old.
I don't know about the drops though. I was a teacher for 8 years and saw my kids going through the annual screening, and drops were never used. Some kids have major issues with drops, and I'd imagine that it could be a sanitary issue as well. I'd call and ask about that one!

Re: School Nurse
I didn't realize there were ped's that didn't check hearing and vision. Mine always was growing up, and DD's has been too (until she had glasses, now I don't have that done at the ped because she sees an eye Dr.)
OP: the drops thing still concerns me. Definitely is a sanitation issue if they did out something in their eyes and they used the same thing for every child. And the fact that you DD said they blinded her!!

Re: School Nurse
I would call up and ask. That would bother me.. especially if I didn't get a mailer in the folder about it. Usually my district will send me a permission slip about these things and I have the option of taking my kids to their ped/specialist for their own testing rather than having them do it. The drop thing bothers me

Re: School Nurse
The school where I work does hearing & vision testing. They never put anything in the eyes. I would question that with the school. In today's day and age, I don't think any school nurse would do that without permission from a parent!
