School open during voting
I dropped Nicholas off at school this morning and noticed that his school is a polling place today. I'm totally not crazy about having "strangers" walking in and out of the school while the kids are there. I wish they would have have taken one of their unused snowdays instead of using them in May, and given the kids off.

Yeah, I don't like that either. Did you notice if they had security present?

I didn't go in, I drop him on the curb. But there was no one outside checking ID's or anything. They were just all walking in, right next to the other students. They do have a woman that sits at the desk on a normal day, but I wouldn't consider her security

I would not like that either.
That's why I thought that most schools are closed for Election Day in November...security as well as needing the space for polling.

Re: School open during voting
I'd call the school and ask what they are doing to make sure kids are safe.
But thanks! This reminded me to go vote! SO make sure they don't tackle me on the way in!

Re: School open during voting
They've always done this, I remember it from when I was a kid.
I understand closing for a major election, but this isn't a HUGE one.
I guess as a parent I understand, but I don't think it would change

If enough people complain it might.
I would Never feel comfortable with strangers walking in and out of my childs school like that without security. Not in todays world.

Our schools were never open as a kid during voting. Ever.
Major or not, they are granting free access to hundreds of kids.
Maybe if enough people that already have children in school start complaining, it WILL change.

Well, we didn't close here for a major election until I was a senior in high school, so that was 10 years ago. And not all local districts even closed for that
It's worth a shot, all I'm saying is that its been going on forever, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't change!

schools never closed for that when i was a kid. i remember people going to the gym to vote.
it's not granting access to hundreds of kids. the voting is in a separate part of the school (like the gym) and there is a direct pathway to go there. voters can never stray from the path, at least in the 3 schools i've worked in. i've been teaching for 9 years, and never ever saw a problem with voters and the children. i have no idea what your individual school is like, but that is my personal experience.
what is there to vote for today anyway? i had no idea it was a voting day.

Brookhaven Town is voting.
Perhaps if they used the cafeteria and they were routed in that door from the outside, and the cafeteria doors were shut, I would feel better. Additionally, afterschool intramurals were not cancelled today, so that means the gym isn't being used either. I have a huge problem with "strangers" being allowed to walk into the school with students. Maybe it wasn't an issue years ago, but the world we live in today...not comfortable at all, and no offense, but regardless of what anyone says, I will never be comfortable with it.
I just contacted the school board asking what security measures are in place and am waiting to hear back.

At our school, the voting booths are immediately outside the Kindergarten classrooms. There is a separate "cafeteria" for the K students, and that's where the voting is. Every election I've gone to, even Presidential elections, the school has been open.

Re: School open during voting
The school I vote in has a separate outside entrance to the polling place (the gym). I am really surprised that your district allows the adults to enter in with the kids.

Re: School open during voting
I'm not 100% sure but I think a police officer has to be there whenever voting is taking place.
This is just what I've seen from working in schools on voting days.
