Re: school supplies
It depends on the item, but most of it I'll get store brand. I don't think there's a huge difference when you are talking about pencils, paper, scissors, glue sticks...
I only buy Crayola crayons, but stores always put them on sale and you can find them really cheap anyway. We tried Rose Art one time and they were such garbage.
Backpacks are another place I prefer to get Lands End or LL Bean since they hold up so well compared to the ones they sell in store, plus if something goes wrong they replace it so quickly.

Re: school supplies
I've been following the staples weekly sales for the past few weeks and have gotten brand name and most of our school supplies for free after rebate.

Re: school supplies
Fiskars scissors are the only ones that work really well. If your child is left handed, please get them lefty scissors--it really does matter! (I am a lefty!)
Ticonderoga pencils are the best--the dollar store erasers never work. Always get #2 and try to sharpen them before they bring them to class. Electric sharpeners overheat quickly and trying to sharpen all the pencils kids bring in takes hours!
Glue doesn't matter, but never buy cheap glue sticks--they dry up right away and go right in the garbage. It's worth it to get Elmers brand glue sticks.
For folders--try to get plastic or the heavy duty paper ones--the cheap ones fall apart within months.
Dollar store markers and crayons aren't even worth a dollar. RoseArt is garbage too. Buy the Crayola when they go on sale. Otherwise you'll spend more money when you have to replace the ones that don't work.
Hope that helps--this is my experience after 13 years in an elementary classroom.

Yes, they are offered by staples. So you do have to lay out your own money but they send you checks in the mail. Estimating I have spent about $15 for the following: 96 count crayola crayons 7.99 (tru sale buy two get one free , but I had a crayola coupon so it made it buy one get two free) 10 count crayola markers free 8 count washable crayola markers free

The staples is about a minute from my son's camp and on my way home so I stop in once a week and only buy what is the on sale item for the week. Usually they have 2 items that are free after MIR. You can fill in the MIR on line.
