Screens - do you remove them for the winter?

It may be a silly question but we've never owned a house before. Chat Icon

I seem to remember my father doing this when we were younger, removing screens and storing them in the shed for the winter.

I would love to get all the windows cleaned inside and out and obviously have to remove the screens to do it. So I was just thinking of storing them in the meantime.

Do you remove your window screens?

Yes, my DH just did this, although you could also leave them on, but then it is easier to clean the windows now & in the spring & the screens won't get dirty over the winter.

I do in the front of my house but only to put candles in the window for Christmas Chat Icon Every other screen stays in place. Edited to add that mine are on the inside.

Re: Screens - do you remove them for the winter?

My sister used to have an old house with really old windows and they could replace the screens with storm windows in the winter for a little extra insulation - so they would switch them out.

Our windows are newer and don't have storms, so we leave the screens in.

No, I keep them in because I keep my windows open pretty much all year. I like the fresh air.

Re: Screens - do you remove them for the winter?

We don't remove the screens. When we bought the house, we were informed all the windows were brand new and didn't require their removal, so we haven't.

our are on the outside so we take almost all of them out in the winter, clean them and store them.

I keep the bathroom window and the kitchen one in all year round

We keep them in although I considered taking them out. They are a bit hard to pop them out. If it wasn't, I would take them out.

We take them out on the windows we know that we won't open. There are a couple of windows we favor opening, such as where the kitty cat likes to sit.

We have 18 windows in the house, and only open 2 or 3 of them so we'll leave those in, and the rest never go in. (We have central air conditioning so they dont even get opened in the summer.)

It brightens up the room so much by removing them.

Last year was our first year with new windows and I left them in. I fact I think our contractor thought I was living in a bubble bc I was asking him about storm windows Chat Icon I think I will take them out this winter.

I've never heard of taking them out. Interesting. I open my windows a lot , so I'll leave them in, I guess.

I'm also not sure how they can be on the inside? Chat Icon

some styles of anderson windows and a few others brands have inside screens. My house has andersen casements & all screens are on the inside, they clip into the wood frame of the window.
We take ours out, mostly because I think they make the windows look dirty. even if I want to air the house out on a warm winter day, they are no bugs so screens arent needed.
The real reason to take the screens out in the winter is to protect them from getting ripped by branches or whatever. Back in the day my Mom took out the screens & put in storm windows. Modern windows are double or triple pane & storm windows aren't needed.

I leave them in.

When I was a kid my mom had taken them down in the winter and had the kitchen window open slightly and a neighborhood cat climbed in the window, hid under my brother's bed and when he fell asleep climbed out and onto his chest. He screamed so loud I've never forgotten and I can't bring myself to open a window with no screen in it.

Re: Screens - do you remove them for the winter?

We take them out for three reasons

It's easier to clean the windows

It's easier to decorate for the holidays

It's much nicer to look out the window w/o the screen

Ah, ok, I think I can picture that. I have always had double hung windows, and I was picture having to remove the screen to open the winodw. Chat Icon thansk for clearing that up.

And CathyB- I have the same fear of cats, birds, squirrels, etc coming in if I didnt' hve screens. ( even though it never happend to me.)

As it is we only have half screens, & if I open from the wrong end it freaks me out. The front yard is so right there!

Re: Screens - do you remove them for the winter?

Just wanted to thank everyone. I think I'll remove them for spring cleaning and then put them back on. We don't have trees or bushes up against the house and all the windows were replaced within the last 5 years so they look pretty good. Chat Icon
