Second Graders- No knowledge of letters/numbers
I teach in a self-contained classroom. One of my students.. ok more than one.. does not know her letter sounds and cannot identify numbers. What would you do in this situation? I need help.

Use tactile letters. Lakeshore sells them they are fabulous for retaining letters and sounds. You can also use the letters to build sight words. Display a word, have them copy it using the letters and then have them trace (and say) each individual letter and then say the whole word. I use this a lot with my special needs students. You can also use the shaving cream on the desk to do it but it is a little messy. We also use Fundations in our school. Expensive as hell but amazing results if your school would fund it. Letter keyword sound cards and drills are great too!!

This is normal in a self-contained classroom. that's why they're there. i would do as many tactile/visual/aural things as you can.... tracling letters in sand, magnetic letters, poems, songs with rhymes, word walls, etc.
I would also guess if they're self-contained, they are probably seeing the speech-therapist. i would talk to him/her about phonemic awareness activities you could do. they are full of ideas!
