secret santa situation
Every xmas eve, the people in my family (aunts uncles, cousins, about 30 people total) do a family secret santa. each person picks a name out of a hat a few months before and they have to buy that person something worth $50. usually it is a gift card. i am starting to think this gift card exchange is pointless (esp. because people get gc's for places they dont even shop) and would rather just put a stop to this. how do i bring this up without sounding like a grinch?

Re: secret santa situation
Hmm that does sound like a pretty lame secret santa. Do you know if anybody else is feeling disgruntled about it? Maybe talk to them first so the two of you can go about it together.

Re: secret santa situation
When it is just a gc, it is stupid, it's like you're passing around $. I have a huge family, and never exchanged gifts with aunts/ uncles, just cousins. The rule was once you got married, you were out of the exchange. Now, my cousins are having kids, so they do the exchange.

thats exactly what i was going to say... bring it up to a few people... and maybe send out an email saying next year everyone that puts their name in write a suggestion for a store that they like or a specific gift they like...

i tried doing this, i actually started a FB group stating for everyone to write out something they'd like and everyone basically wrote "visa gift card"

Re: secret santa situation
I think it's too late to change the rules for this year but mention it next year when you do the name choosing. I am sure others agree with you but haven't mentioned it.

it sounds like you might be the only one that feels this way... idk what else you can do aside from not participating...

Re: secret santa situation
I think this year, after everyone gets their gift card you should point out how absolutely ridiculous it is for everyone to just buy a $50 gift card, and let them know that next year you are opting out.

Re: secret santa situation
Can you put a "No Giftcards" rule? I feel like that is sooo annoying if everyone is just doing Gift cards...might as well save your $50.

I think the best thing would be a no GC rule.

Re: secret santa situation
On thanksgiving we pick our secret santa. You have to give three ideas within the $ limit. There are no GC's allowed (except this year, we started to allow Itunes)

Re: secret santa situation
I would just tell all involved that since the names were already selected for this year, I will participate, but for next year, count me out.
I've done this before to get out of SS exchanges and interestingly enough, in one of them, once I spoke up, a couple of other people said they weren't interested anymore either.

Re: secret santa situation
Or, you could always do a swap secret santa. We did this one year at my school & it was fun.
Everyone buys something for x amount & then first person's name drawn picks a gift, any gift. They keep it. Then next person drawn can take the first person's gift or grab a new gift. Any person can take any gift opened at any time.
It's fun though; but next year maybe down the $$.

this is what we were doing for christmas, but gc's were always allowed with anyone over 22. i wish no gift cards were allowed because some people wanted a gift card from an out of state store that could only be received if you went there. we tried to do it through elfster.comlast year since people who didn't got to thanksgiving were involved. out of 14 people, 7 of them didn't understand the website/don't know how to use a computer. very frustrating..
this year no one mentioned secret santa so i am just going to buy for the kids.

I have a big mouth and would just say that you think there needs to be a no GC rule. I bet others will agree.
