Section on 3-D sonos on channel4 last night!
Channel 4, 11:00 news did a piece on the safety of 3-d sonos and they interviewed a highly regarded radiologist from hackensack Univ Hopital (I know of him personally and he is well-known and very prominent in the medical field)who reported the safety of these machines at franchise photo studios are "unknown" and they fear what the repercutions for the baby will be 20-30 years from now. They feel this is done purely for diagnostic reasons and should be done only out of necessity. The FDA even advised AGAINST having these types of sonos done in a place that is not medically based. I hope this is helpful to any of you who were thinking of going to one of these franchise places. Go to this link and read:
http://www.wnbc.com/health/8536064/detail.html
p.s- make sure you scan down to the bottom of this site and read the actual FDA warning, very alarming

Re: Section on 3-D sonos on channel4 last night!
Thank you for posting that! We did consider looking into 3-D but ultimately decided it just wasn't that important...we'll get to see him when he's born AND its just a little too expensive with all else involved right now.
I do admit, the concept is cool and I love seeing peoples 3-D pics...but the article gave me good cause to not do it..

My doctor said this about regular sonos as well. She just says they don't know what they are actually doing.

My Dr. wouldn't sign the consent form for me to have this done. She was adamantly against it...so I went with her gut feeling.

but your doc did it right? So that means it is monitored correctly and done for diagnostic reasons, not for entertainment. The machine they use is probably considered safe, while the ones at the franchises are not monitired and I remember reading somewhere that at times they turn up the imaging dimensions so that they can get a clearer picture and they are unsure what safety risk that poses, but I'm sure your doc did it under the regulations set forth by the FDA and many other medical monitoring companies.

My ob-gyn also strongly advised me NOT to get a 3D ultrasound.

Re: Section on 3-D sonos on channel4 last night!
I had a 3-D one done by my doctor but it was very quick at the end of the diagnostic ultrasound and it really looked nothing like the ones those shops do. Kind of makes you wonder. My office is also not very liberal with ultrasounds unless they are needed because they say they don't really know the effects of long term exposure to ultrasounds. I personally would never get a 3-D one done at one of those places. Not worth the unknown risk to me.

Re: Section on 3-D sonos on channel4 last night!
I only skimmed the article and the FDA warning - and I watched this on TV the other night. What are they saying are some of the things it could do to harm the baby? What are the side effects and bad things they have found the 3D sono to cause?
I researched it before having it done and the 3D sono is the same as a regular sono in the doctors office. Its the same machine too. What is different about the 3D is the software that produces the images.

I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, just giving some answers to your questions based on what the FDA said.

This is part of what the FDA said "Still, ultrasound is a form of energy, and even at low levels, laboratory studies have shown it can produce physical effects in tissue, such as jarring vibrations and a rise in temperature. Although there is no evidence that these physical effects can harm a fetus, the FDA says the fact that these effects exist means that prenatal ultrasounds can't be considered completely innocuous.
As more advanced ultrasound technologies (usually using higher ultrasound intensities) become available, greater numbers of expectant mothers and their families are requesting fetal keepsake videos and portraits for souvenirs. Sometimes these images may be made by people not well trained, or for longer exposure times and at higher levels than are usually used in medical situations. "

They also said that while it's the same machinery as the doctor's office, there is no guarantee that it's upkept as well or the techs are properly trained.

Re: Section on 3-D sonos on channel4 last night!
Thanks for the info. I wish they were more specific such as what the high levels of energy could do - besides raise temperature.
