Selecting artwork to hang on your walls...

Do you choose something that "speaks" to you? Reminds you of a place you visited? Use photos of your family only? Or, do you pick something that you don't particularly care for the actual print but has all the colors that match/fit your room, paint, sheets, couch, etc?

I have the hardest time picking things out to hang on the walls. My walls have nothing hanging from them LOL

Re: Selecting artwork to hang on your walls...

besides personal photo walls pics, I usually choice prints that match my color scheme and tend to be floral or tuscan like (which is my taste)

Yes, yes, yes.

I would never choose something I didn't care for just b/c it had went with my color scheme - I would wait until I found something I loved. (Which explains why I haven't hung anything in my bedroom yet Chat Icon )

Re: Selecting artwork to hang on your walls...

oh, I save up for the real deal.

At best, an original water color or lithograph by some up and coming artist, or someone with a pretty good rep (I'm blessed to have 4 or so originals), at worst, a second authorized printing litho or seriograph by someone ridiculously famous (picasso, dali) to fill the empty walls.

Some real art is really $$$ (original miro or dali lithograph runs roughly 2-8k), but 2nd printing seriographs usually cost under $300 a piece.

to me it's better to grab something real-ish when you'll be looking at it for several decades.... then I wait until michael's has a custom framing sale, so I can save a couple hundred in that area.

I will admit it's a bennie that my family has collected stuff over the years, and gives me good litho's as wedding gifts and the like.....Chat Icon but I did buy almost all the less expensive (under $500) stuff myself and had it framed.

Oh, and we oddly have no photos on display on our walls... only one frame in the bedroom of DH with my cat.... we only have angry/wierd modern art on our walls Chat Icon not too welcoming to guests, I guess Chat Icon

Re: Selecting artwork to hang on your walls...

We have mostly personal photos. Right now it's wedding photos, but we're ordering shots from a recent trip and I have a few from some other trips that I haven't gotten around to hanging up. The rest is art from no-name artists mostly - just stuff we've come across that we like, bought off the street from artists randomly throughout the years. We also have a painting that DH's uncle painted for us for our wedding and a giant matted photo of the second guy to swim the English channel (we believe).

We like it.

ETA: We also recently got a very old photo of my grandpa framed - he was probably 3 or 4 when it was taken. It's on gorgeous old thick photo paper and it's amazing.

Obviously he models goggles because he doesn't look like he could model extra small condoms.

WTG Whammy.

We currently have very little on our walls. A few pictures of Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, a couple Rolling Stones with Nirvana on the cover, a few flowers, and this picture I took of the Angel of the Waters in Central Park:

I can't wait to go through the thousands of pictures we've taken over the years and start printing and framing them. We've always wanted to do that, but only when we owned the walls we were putting them on. Chat Icon
