Sell By Date?

DH & I disagree on it but because I have no sense of smell - and have eaten things that have gone bad before...I listen to him. He tosses milk out ON the sell by date. I explained that I thought milk was good 1-2 days afterwards - and as long as he's there to tell me it hasn't gone bad - it's ok.

If milk has a sell by date - what date won't you drink it?

Re: Sell By Date?

I have to toss it at the sell by date because DH won't go near it. But I go by smell (I have a good sense of smell unlike DH) and it's usually still good 1-2 days after the date. Not always, but alot of the time.

If you notice, alot of container have an earlier date for NYC anyway...I guess it's okay for LIers to drink old milk but not NYCers. Chat Icon

I throw away milk on the sell by date. Thats when I am drinking it in coffee or cereal. I will use it one day past if I am baking a cake.

I will use milk until it smells sour. Sometimes it will last a few days past the sell by date. I think it depends on how long the container has been opened for because sometimes it will go bad before the sell by date.

ETA - Other foods I will only use until the sell by date.

Re: Sell By Date?

I always throw it out by the sell by date - especially now being pregnant - I am not taking any chances. DH on the other hand will not throw it out - until it is bad.

Re: Sell By Date?

I am a fanatic about this. I always throw it away on the sell by date. My SIL is EXACT OPPOSITE!! We recently went to her house for dinner and she had 3 salad dressings on the table and 2 of them were from 2002!! OMG! They are 3 years old!! I almost died when I saw the date. I told my DH not to eat them and then casually mentioned it to my SIL and she said "oh, it tastes fine though"

Let me just add that she is PREGNANT! Unbelievable! I also caught her trying a new cheese this weekend which happened to be Brie and I was like "you can't eat that! Your PG" She said she had no idea what kind of cheese it was. God knows what else she's put into her body Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks for responding. Except that means DH was right. Chat Icon I assumed "Sell By" meant the stores had to sell by that date & you had 1-2 days.

Oh well. Thanks again.!

Re: Sell By Date?

I handle consumer relations at my job and this is such an issue on products. You cannot believe how many people want me to tell them it is okay to still use products by their expiration dates. Most of our products have USE BY dates on them. So when they try to get me to tell them it is safe to consume anything after those dates, I ask them "Would you use milk or eggs past their dates?"

Oh, and I will maybe use milk 1 day past if it doesn't smell and I am desperate. Otherwise I toss it

Re: Sell By Date?

I've had milk go bad by the sell by date when I kept it on the door of the fridge....now since I've figured out how to adjust the shelves in the fridge....I put it towards the back and it keeps longer.

I make DH smell it cuz I don't like the smell of milk...PERIOD

Re: Sell By Date?

My wife is probably the worst offender. She will stop drinking it two days BEFORE the sell by date. W-T-F.... !!!! Chat Icon

I will usually drink milk up to two days after the sell date (the later sell date... not the NYC date). Never had any issues. A few times I went three days after.

Remember its a "SELL BY" date.... not a "DRINK BY" date. The manufacturers don't expect you to drink a gallon of milk the day you buy it... so a little leighway is ok.

Why is the sell by date earlier in NY? That never made sense to me!

Same here, it is a SELL BY date not a USE BY date. If the milk has not gone bad why throw it away? Chat Icon Our milk always lasts days beyond the date because our fridge is very cold. The higher the temp, the quicker it spoils.

As for the two different dates for NYC and everywhere else...
Difficulty with distribution especially when one takes into consideration the longer time that milk/dairy products spend in the "danger zone" when in transit between distributor and "refrigerated" milk case in the city. Notoriously slow stocking in grocery stores, sub-optimal refrigeration temperatures, traffic jams etc. All make for the shorter shelf life of milk/dairy in new York city.

Also found this
"With the exception of New York City (which has its own 9-day sell by date), New York State does not impose any sell by date on its milk processors. The majority of these milk processors voluntarily affix sell by dates of between 10 and 14 days on their containers of pasteurized milk. New York State does not enforce any sell by date, and views the sell by date as a tool by which processors and retailers can efficiently rotate their inventories."
