Selling a home with pets?!

We are selling our home. We take good care of our pets but we still have a litter box. Best way to control the odor?

Selling a home with pets?!

We are in the middle of closing on the sale of our co-op right now and have a cat.

We scoop as he uses the box - obviously, if we are home and hear him in there. When we are out it is one of the first things we do when we walk in. I will never understand why and HOW people leave it sitting in there for days. Yuck!

The litter gets changed every other Saturday morning. We sprinkle Arm and Hammer odor control baking powder every few days. We also use the Fresh Step crystals, they really do a good job at controlling the odor.

Re: Selling a home with pets?!

Thanks. We scoop frequently too but a buyer commented the room stunk like "cat piss." He clearly hasn't seen some of the homes I've seen! I will scoop more and try arm and hammer baking powder too.

Not selling a home but we switched to the pine pellet litter and there is no longer a pee smell.

Re: Selling a home with pets?!

There is a new arm and hammer litter that supposedly "seals in" the stank... I tried it out and its ok, nothing earth shattering, but it might be worth a try. Also, consider switching to a hooded litterbox and maybe just airing out the room really well before showing it (and or storing the source, aka the litterbox) if possible.

Try CarpetFresh and a plug-in in the room with the litter box.

Is there a scent in the carpet from the cat? You could rent the rug the doctor from lowes and there is an additive that is very good at removing odors. We used it after a fire and it helped...

Re: Selling a home with pets?!

I buy Worlds Best cat litter.

It's expensive but lasts a long time and I notice less of an odor.

We also keep our litter boxes in the basement.

I always run a dehumidifier and often when I'm home, open the windows to let in fresh air.
I also will spray those concentrated room sprays if I'm having guests over, candles or Scensty.

That is all I use and have never had the pee smell.
Tried yesterday's news and got the ammonia smell after a few days. Tossed the bag and went back to pine.

If you don't have pets and walk into a home with pets you can usually smell it even in clean homes.

When we were looking we didn't have pets and I never even had one growing up so I could smell animals in the houses I looked at.

I would burn candles and shampoo the rug. Unfortunately if the cat has peed in the past it could be in the subfloor and any smell will never go away.

I am OCD with an 86lb dog and you would never know I have a dog. I pulled my dog bed and bowls up before a showing and they had no idea. I don't have carpeting because I think it holds smell in though. I would just rip the carpet up because once you have that cat pee smell it's almost impossible to get rid of without ripping.

Also, do yourself a favor and make sure there are no photos which contain anything related to animals or the actual animals in them in the listing!

I've seen multiple MLS listings and the dog or animals were actually pictured IN the photos, laying in a bed in the corner, in the background, on the couch etc!

I am an animal lover but its an immediate turn off for SO many!

I would have fired my REA on the spot for that. Such a dumb, rookie thing to do! You immediately lose people.

Arm and Hammer also makes a powder you can put into the litter box for added odor control when you leave before a showing, and you can vaccuum with pet fresh on the carpet. The plug in airwicks are a great idea as well
