Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
I have been trying to figure this one out for a while
I get paid every 2 weeks- so next friday is my last check for the year- 12/22
but that will be for the weeks of Dec 4th thru today
I have never worked anywhere that paid on this timeline- normally I would have gotten paid for the week before and the week that just ended
so I get paid again on Jan 5th
is it just me or is this a funny way of doing it
( I work for a private company)

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
Does sound funny
I get paid twice a month the 15h and the 30th. But the 15th's check is the 31st of 1st to the 15th. Etc.

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
I've heard of it done that way, however most people I know either get paid weekly or semi-monthly (15th and last day of month).

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
I know...it get's confusing until you get used to it. 12/22 may be the last paystub you receive in 2006 but the 1/5/07 paycheck will include time for 2006. Therefore your last payment for 2006 will actually be made to you in 2007. ETA: In reading your post again I realize that you may very well already understand this...sorry.
To answer your question...yes it is weird. Once upon a time I got paid every week so it took a lot to get used to bo-weekly..then I had a job that was the 15th and 30th of the month...yikes that took a lot to get used to.

there has be some reason- it must benefit them in some way?

That's how mine is too. It's kind of nice--you get a check even after you stop working there. I did go a few weeks before getting my initial check.

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
A lot of companies pay bi-weekly. I am unsure what your confusion is.... That you get a check for work done in both 2006 & 2007? Your W-2 will still only reflect what you earned in 2006.

Yup - it's like we have a one week lag. We get paid for one week on time and the other a week late..or so it seems to me. The only good thing is that by law you are entitled to this money so if anything ever happens it cannot be withheld from you.

There is no benefit to the company to pay bi-monthly or bi-weekly. Its just however they set up their payroll way back when. I want to change my company's because i hate getting paid bi-weekly.

I just think it's odd to not finsh out the year with all your money
I have been paid bi-weekly before- but the year started over Jan 1
and I have been paid twice a month- also starting on Jan 1

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
LOL - I am so sorry - I am behind so I keep posting after we move off the topic.
I went back to edit Beth cause I realized I mis-understood...sorry!
Um - I think the reason they do it this way (bi-weekly) is because it cuts down on payroll costs to run fewer times each year...so instead of each week they may run bi-weekly. It's the only thing I know off the bat that is to the company's advantage but there may be other reasons. I think that the whole last week of December issue is just coincidence where it gets paid in January...but you'd think they could be better about it.

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
I want to change my company's because i hate getting paid bi-weekly.
why? I used to hate 2 times a month when I was first working b/c some months I would have 3 weekends in 1 paycheck- and it was harder to budget ( b/c as a younger person living in NYC- I spent most of my money on the weekend)
I like having 2 months with an extra check and getting paid every other friday so much better

Most companies will not start their payroll over on Jan 1 - they will just continue the bi-weekly cycle. It's not uncommon. I agree though - it kind of sucks because all of you bills are monthly and then you pay is bi-weekly.

it was only bad the first month I was working here- b/c I lost a week out of that month
now it's the same- but if I left they would owe me for a week
and I get 3 checks in March and in another month- but I will just add that to savings

Re: Semi- spin off- Payroll question-
We get paid the same way. The reason that the last check is received in January (at least for us) is because the people that don't have direct deposit will receive their last check for '06 in the mail around Jan 2nd. For tax purposes, that would mean some employees would have a different # of checks for the year. We always have 26 pay periods & 26 checks. To even it out, the money isn't sent to your bank until after the new year
