Senate confirms Pete Buttigieg as transportation secretary
https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-biden-cabinet-climate-cabinets-transportation-adaccf75c41ecf0b1628c009521d425f
... Buttigieg, a 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Biden’s one-time rival during the Democratic presidential primaries, was approved on a 86-13 vote. ...
Another bipartisan vote, which is very positive thing to see. I hope he does well.

This is a great spot for him because his mayoral accomplishments were mostly in the area of infrastructure.
He and his husband make a really cute couple (besides the point, I know lol.)

I said way back when on here that I absolutely love him and I personally think that he would have done more to unite the country than Biden could ever do.

Too bad an openly gay man has very little chance of winning a presidential election in this country.

I disagree - I think he could have won it. I know I am probably in the minority but i do think he could have and I think that he has a lot of potential to run and win in 2024.

Re: Senate confirms Pete Buttigieg as transportation secretary
I don't think he would have won in 2020. I don't think the country as a whole is accepting enough yet.
I'm glad to see he's got a Federal Secretary position so he can get into National politics and hopefully run sometime soon.

I don't think he could have won this time around, especially against Trump. The way the US is right now they are not ready to accept him. I really think that only person that could have beat Trump and did was Biden. I also think if Biden ran in 2016 he would have beat Trump as well as he is more towards the center to appease some republican voters and would of had their vote.

As much as I personally would love to see him win, that segment of the American population you believe are stupid also happen to be homophobic. There is no way an openly gay man, a woman, a minority, could've won against Trump. The only person that could've beat Trump was another old white man. And if Biden had run in 2016 Trump wouldn't have happened. Especially because Biden isn't very far left. We're not as progressive a country as we'd like to think we are.

I think he knew that, too. That's one of the reasons he didn't stay in the Primaries too long. Definitely long enough to get his name out there, and judge the temperance of the country, but not too long to distract everyone from the main focus of the election.

Re: Senate confirms Pete Buttigieg as transportation secretary
I'm not sure where I land on this one but I find it interesting.
I think the data needs to be looked at more closely. From what I had heard from exit polling there actually weren't that many people who switched from Trump to Biden. Most people doubled down. The win was largely due to increased turnout, people who were galvanized to support the Democratic candidate. I do think that crowd would have lined up behind almost anyone the party nominated. But I haven't looked at that data in a while so updates may paint a different picture.
Remember Biden lagged behind in early Dem polling. Dems and moderate Rs coalesced around him to stop the insanity of the last four years.
The question is really would homophobia have turned away enough people to affect enough of the swing states.
I do believe he would have gotten the popular vote.

I am not a fan of Pete - he has little experience - he was the mayor of a pretty small city. I was not a fan of his policies during the primary, He is very smart but he comes off as very pandering to me. He seems to be packaging himself up to be a perfect candidate and it all seems inauthentic.
His sexuality is irrelevant to me. I do see the country electing a gay white man before a woman.

This might be one of the few times we agree. I think that most Dems are progressive enough to not only accept but embrace a gay candidate. And I think that most moderate republicans and any swing voters would have no problem with it either but I think most people stuck to party lines in this election.
I really hope that in four years the Democratic party is willing to take the chance on him.

I'm not sure we do because you seem pretty sure he would have won. I'm really just raising questions. I share others' reservations as to whether this country is ready to elect a gay man.
I am also sure that sexism played a role in Hillary's loss and sexism is homophobia's sibling. (Before someone jumps down my throat, I'm not saying anyone who doesn't like her is sexist; I'm saying a contingent of them are.)
We are not a very socially progressive country overall and I worry that too many people perceive leadership to be a masculine endeavor, even just subconsciously.
I don't know, maybe he'll try again and America will pleasantly surprise me. Being from the Midwest probably helps with the abundance of swing states there.

Whew, well thank goodness we don't actually agree. I do think he would have pulled it out by the similar narrow margin that Biden did, but clearly that's just my opinion and we will never know what could've been....
