sending a toddler for an upper GI test?

Anyone else have to do this with their child? Where did you go? Was it a place that specialized in children? How did they drink that liquid?!

Also, do you mind sharing why your DC had to go? Just trying to figure some things out with my daughter - she's been vomiting for 2 wks now and we're being sent for lots of tests - sooo much easier said than done with a toddlerChat Icon

Re: sending a toddler for an upper GI test?

my son had to go at 3 months....they were suspectng pyloric stenosis---he couldnt eat past 12 that night---our appt was at 9

they cut a HUGE hole in the nipple of the bottle, and he had to get undressed (only in a duiaper) and i had to feed him the barium---he was very, very good...he was completely covered in the barium though, so i felt horrible----but really, it wasn't bad---it just looked bad, like he was covered in white paint.

we went to zwanger in west islip, we were told he needed it at 4 the day before. good luck!!!!!

My DD had it done when she was 3 days old, in the NICU at NSHU, Manhassset. The ped gastros that were heading up her treatment ordered it.

I was not there for it so I can't give you any more details.

Thanks so much everyone.

How do you handle toddlers for this sort of thing? What do you do if they don't take the liquid? If forced, I can see my daughter vomiting it because she gets soooo upset with this stuffChat Icon

Also, what exactly does an upper GI screen for? Can you diagnose acid reflux with it?

Thanks so much!!

Re: sending a toddler for an upper GI test?

Yes you can diagnose acid reflux with. they put the child under a floro machine (unfortunatley i dont think they will shield b/c they need to see everything, some try) the floro machine will show a live feed of the child drinking and that will show if the barium is going back up the esophagus (which is acid reflux)..

First they will try (at least every where i been this is what they done) and put chocolate syrup in barium to help with the taste. If child really doesnt want to drink they will either try and decide if the test is necessary and if permited by parents (i only seen done once) they will put a tube up the childs nose and down throat so they can put the barium in..

Theres always a possiblity child will vomit even if takes willing, it can iritate stomach.. i seen adults vomit.

Re: sending a toddler for an upper GI test?

ugh, another issue for us is milk allergies so not sure if the syrup will work for us. So annoying! I cringe at the thought of her getting a tube up her nose, but I guess we have no choice if she won't drink it!

One last question - do you know if this test is still accurate if the patient has been taking medicine for the acid reflux?

If I remember correctly, my son was taking axid for him Acid Reflux when we took him for the GI. I wasn't able to give it to him that morning, because he couldn't have a bottle.
