Sending resumes to companies that are not advertising job?
There are a few local companies I want to send my resume to. If I don't have a contact there and they are not advertising anywhere that they are hiring, how should I go about contacting them? Should I frist call and ask for HR or the department I am interested in? Or do I just fax/email/mail the resume... to whos attention? So far, all of the jobs I've had have been through networking, so I am new to this.

I actually faxed/emailed/and dropped off resumes at CA and Symbol. Nothing came of either. This was like 6 years ago...About 2 years later Symbol called me to see if I wanted to interview for a job with a miserable salary.
ETA: I found the name of the Director of HR for each.

I would go on the corporate site and try to find an HR contact or something-- then use your cover letter and alter it slightly- saying that you are inquiring about any positions in the LI office that would be a good fit for your background and expertise, etc.

I would definitely send it to Human Resources Department, or you can call and get a persons name in HR. Either way, they will get it.
If your resume impresses them, even though they may not have an opening, they will Im sure hold on to it

Julie, you might want to try Henry Schein. They hired a bunch of my friends who were laid off from Computer Associates.

Re: Sending resumes to companies that are not advertising job?
The company that I am working for now did not advertise my position, but I had read in an industry magazine that the company was re-launching a magazine in a new format. I went on their corporate website & got the contact info & they called me that same day.
Good luck

I will check he if we have anything open. In the mean time you can send me your resume and I can give it to my HR department.
