Service to convert VHS to DVD?

When I moved, I found some old home movies that are on VHS. My VCR is not acting so well, and I'd like to just convert the tapes and get rid of the VCR altogether.

Does anyone know of a local reputable place that can do this? There are sites online but I'm really nervous about something going wrong and the data being lost forever. It happened to one of the tapes of family home movies years ago.

Thanks. Chat Icon

I found Classic Video on Union Avenue in Westbury and Duplication Specialists on Merrick Road in Baldwin.

Anyone ever use either of these?

There is a camera store near my mother that will do this... East Coast Camera in Valley Stream

How many tapes are we talking? I have a VCR/DVD recorder that I use for this very purpose.

Are you sure it's your VCR acting up?

My parents bought one of those VHS to DVD converters and found that many of our old home videos no longer work. Apparently the tape starts to deteriorate over time.

Re: Service to convert VHS to DVD?

Caroline, it's less than 5 tapes. I thought about going that route but to buy a whole unit for just those conversions seems silly sicne we already have both a VCR and a DVD player.

I could actually buy a converter and hook my computer up to it but again, to buy a new device and try to figure it out - I thought it would be easier and possibly less costly to find a service that does it. Chat Icon Thanks for the recco, I didn't even think about camera stores. I should call around.

KeriAnn, the thing about the VCR is that it sometimes doesn't even take the tape. And then sometimes it won't eject it! I put a few of them in to watch them and the quality seemed fine.
