"set in stone" holiday menus?

How do you feel about Holiday menus that NEVER change?

i.e.
Thanksgiving = appetizer = spinich dip. Dinner= turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, corn, stuffing, rolls, etc. Dessert = an apple pie with ice cream, bakery black and white cookies, and pillsbury slice and bake chocolate chip cookies.

I offered to bring brownies, but was told, "Oh no, we don't eat brownies on Thanksgiving."

I know what you mean. My DH loves pumpkin pie - so I made it one year. You would of thougt I brought over something from outerspace. It's such a tradition with other people but since we never ate it before my family looked at it for the first 5 min like it was moon food.

But now they love it and I have to bring it.

Sorry but I have to at we don't eat brownies on Thanksgiving. Brownies should be allowed every day. Nothing is set in stone here. I mean we do the traditional stuff but I'm always open to new things.

You have to eat the same type of stuff every year...its good karma.

There will always be a Dead Animal, Sweet Potatos and Pecan/Pumpkin Pie.

I will even partake in the dead animal today so it must be an important day.

I don't know. I look forward to it. Even if it's always the same. It's certainly not every day we eat a meal like this. We do add something different every once and a while, but the main foods always stay the same and I have to say that I enjoy the consistency.

After 30+ years with the green bean casserole, I finally revolted last year and brought a different green bean dish. Everyone loved it, so I am doing that again this year .

If someone offered to bring a dessert or dish to my house whatever it may be , I would never refuse

I'll eat anything and I don't think it is polite to say no we don't want that

I don't know, I always look forward to the same food too. I went to my fil's one year and they had jello. I was like "what??!". You don't eat jello for Thanksgiving!!

I enjoy somewhat consistency, something different every once in a while is fine too. My mom always makes cheesecake and i love it. This year we went to my inlaws (the first time)and my MIL made nothing for dessert, she was even complaining about having to make a turkey. WHy we even came here i have no idea, next year back at my parents house.

Oh yes!! I know what you mean!

I offered to make the Mashed & Swirled Sweet & Yulon Gold Potaoes I make that EVERYONE loves!! I make like 7 pounds of potatoes ....MORE then enough for all...........Yet when I got to my Mom's....she made a HUGE amount of twice baked potatoes AND Spicy Sweet Potatoes...........BECAUSE SHE ALWAYS MAKES THEM We can't allow change?

My family likes to prepare variations of typical meals. For example they wont make plain sweet potatoes, rather a sweet potato souffle in a puff pastry. Turkey is a staple, but the stuffing may change. Could be a corn bread stuffing, could be something else. I dontt hink my family has seen a green bean casserole in about 10 years.

I made some good fudgy brownies...from scratch.

I was told, "Thanksgiving dessert is pumpkin pie."

Wouldn't you know - the brownies were a hit!

OK - you're not invited to my house on Thanksgiving LOL! Growing up, Jello salad was often part of a meal as a "fruit" salad side dish. A few years ago I started making a Thanksgiving Jello with crushed pinapple, chopped apples and cranberries. MIL couldn't get over the fact that it was a salad dish, not dessert served at the end of the meal. I make it because I love it, and now a few others are starting to join in and eat it too. Besides - haven't you ever heard the description of a Wisconsin Salad Bar? - Three flavors of Jello and some Cottage Cheese. Jello is very middle-America. I love having certain traditional items, but like to try new things too.
