You can be a person with a very high IQ and still be ignorant about the world around you.

IMO
Ignorance is not caring enough to find out the truth or another opinion
Stupidity is just being plain oblivious to the world around you

I agree. I think ignorance is more when someone is uninformed and has preconceived notions about things they don't know about. Stupid is just not knowing better or lack of understanding.

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
ig·no·rance (gnr-ns) Pronunciation Key n.The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed. n: the lack of knowledge or education
stu·pid·i·ties: The quality or condition of being stupid. A stupid act, remark, or idea. stupidity n 1: a poor ability to understand or to profit from experience 2: a stupid mistake
OK, so it seems that ignorance is the LACK of experience and information- kind of like being naive...
And it seems that stupidity is knowing it but not being good at knowing it... Doing something over and over again and expecting a different result or not learning one's lesson... also, it could just be saying something dumb w/o thinking...
HTH!

I disagree with what ignorance is-- ignorance is really more that you don't know any better-- it's more of a cocoon like mentality where you are just not exposed to anything else other than what you know. Hence the saying, ignorance is bliss.
As for stuidity, you could be the most open minded person, but still dumb as a rock. It's almost that you would lack the ability to comprehend what is around you-- no matter how much you are exposed to.

I agree with this your take on it. From my experience that ingnorant person is the one who is aware of their lack of knowledge in a subject and listens to form his own opinion. The stupid person makes up for their lack of knowledge by quickly forming an opinion without hearing the facts.

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
ignorance is not being aware of certain situations
stupidity is more of not having the ability to be aware...
i think you can be born stupid but you cant be born ignorant... that is a product of your environment...

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
Ignorance is not using the necessary knowledge to make a logical decision or not recognizing something to be fact and therefore making their own conclusions based on false/nonfactual assumptions.
Stupidity is not making a logical choice either by not having adequate knowledge or not using knoweldge presented.
JMO There are a lot of stupid people that make bad choices due to lack of knowledge and experience, then there are ignorant people that no matter what they will still make a choice based on their own conceptions.
Makes sense to me

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
Stupidity IMO is someone who knows better but chooses to do or believe regardless
Ignorance is IMO can range in definition. Ignorant ultimately for me is someone who in uninformed
and that could be purposeful ignorance or not purposeful.

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
simple...
ignorance is not being aware of something. ie: I am ignorant about Africa, I know almost nothing about it.
stupidity is not being able to grasp the concept.

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
To elaborate on what I said earlier, I think stupidity has to do with one's capacity to comprehend things, while ignorance has more to do with one's exposure to the world around them, whether voluntary or involuntary.
You can be someone who is not very bright (i.e. stupid), but still watch the news and be aware of the events going on in the world. You may not be able to think about them in an abstract manner, but you are still aware.
You can be a genius with a 140 IQ and have no idea what is going on in a the world around you. To me, that is ignorance.

Re: Settle the debate: What is the difference between ignorance and stupidity?
I think stupidity is not having the background knowledge or understanding or the ability to understand something
I think ignorance is just not having the motivation or wanting to learn something because it differs from what you want to think.
Ignorance is worse in my book
