Severe diaper rash - please help *Updated*

My poor DD can't catch a break. Her diaper rash is so bad she screams in pain everytime she goes to the bathroom. It looks like it may start bleeding soon.

We've been up since 2am and I can't get her to go back to sleep. Every time she falls asleep she pees or poops and starts crying.

SHe's on Augmentin and Acidophillus (sp?) which causes diarreah. We are only on day 5 of 10 (Lord, help me)

I called the ped yesterday and I've tried the nurses tricks. I was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions. Here's what we've done so far:

I let her soak in a warm bath (no soap)

Don't use wipes, just warm wet paper towels

I globbed on triple paste and "sealed" it in with globs of Aquaphor.

Now I put her naked on a hospital pad and letting her air out for about 15 -20 minutes.

What else can I do????? She needs to be on the medication she's been on so many others unsuccessfully and this one seems to be working, except it causes awful diaper rash.

She also started cereal last week and fruit yesterday - should I stop since that's probably giving her loose stools too?

I feel so bad for her and we are both sooo exhausted

========================
UPDATED: I just called the ped again today. What a difference a nurse makes. This one is so nice and asking questions.

They believe its a yeast rash and I should be using an anti fungal cream 3x a day.

The acidophlilis apparently is helping. They said if she wasn't on it she'd be having loose stools all day vs. what she's doing.

Ok back to CVS I go....

Re: Severe diaper rash - please help

my mother swears cornstarch clears it right up, but I have also read that it may cause yeast infections, so I don't know..
sorry that was no help.

Oh man I'm so sorry - poor little Hannah. I was going to suggest Triple Paste because everyone says it works wonders. I think letting her air out will be helpful too. I want to squeeze that little girl and give her a hug. Chat Icon

Also it could be a fungal infection. I would call the peditrician and then they can prescribe something. That may be the only thing that clears it up.

Aw, poor thing! If you want to continue giving fruit, I would recommend bananas, because they will help make her stools a little more solid.

I found a diaper cream called Dyprotex at Walgreens. It is a pod of cream and come with an applicator. It is soooo thick and it cleared up DS's diaper rash to 80% over night. His was from a food allergy and was very very red and I started to see flecks of blood. The only thing that stinks about the cream is that is kinda hard to clean off when you are changing them. But unfotunally I think it will stay red until she is done with the medicine. I would stop the fruit also and start it again when she is done on the antibiotic.

Re: Severe diaper rash - please help

I though Acidophylis helped prevent the yeast infections / diarrhea?

I know alot of people on here say Aquaphor. I swear by Putt Paste or Triple Paste.

Good luck...poor baby!

Yes supposedly that's what the acidophylis does, however it doesn't seem to be working.

I tried Butt Paste, but that didn't work. I then moved on to Triple Paste and that doesn't seem to work so now I threw in Aquaphor. I'm like a drug store over hereChat Icon
