Severe swelling with mosquito bites
My daughter tends to have severe reactions to mosquito bites.
Her hand & fingers are now swollen to at least twice its normal size. She has no shortness of breath at all - just the inflammation.
I've already tried Benedryl - didn't work. Any ideas?
Is there anything the pediatrician can give that will make it go down if she's not reacting to Benedryl?

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
My first instinct is to say it sounds like cellulitis, but I don't think it generally affects the hands, but I don't know enough to say that. I know my grandfather ends up hospitalized when he gets bug bites because he suffers from cellulitis when he gets bit. His body has a staph infection as it is, though. Hmm. I'd definitely call the ped. That's not a normal reaction to a bug bite. Poor Maddie

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
I am allergic to some mosquito bites, bugs and most spiders and will swell. I usually have to take BOTH orally AND topical cream of Benadryl.
If it does not work, I would go to the Dr.

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
Thanks everyone! We're off to the pediatrician. She can't even close her hand at this point.
I did research it. There are allergies to mosquito bites (Skeeter Syndrome) but can't seem to find what they do for it.

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
I am allergic to mesquito bites - i take a 2nd dose of claritan for the day - (i take 1 claritan every day) - also use the topical bendryl cream
bendryl makes me shake uncontrobaly -
there are other over the counter meds that work well - such as sudafed
definetly ask the doctor but a lot with allergies is trial and error

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
I am allergic to mosquito bites and I am also unfortunate enough to attract mosquitos.
I just take benadryl at night and use After Bite, ice and cortisone cream to keep the swelling down. I had to go to the Dr. last month because of a really bad reaction to 12 bites on my feet and she said there is nothing she can prescribe to help except the cortisone.
My DH laughs at the swelling and calls it elephantitis, but it makes me sick to my stomach. I feel for your DD

I'm so glad to hear someone outgrew this!
Thank you all for the well wishes. The little patient has requested sushi for lunch, so it looks like we're going out in the pouring rain.

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
Barb-
This happens to me if I get stung by a mosquito. I develop cellulitis and usually wind up wtih IV antibiotics and some other meds to help. I have been in the ER numerous times with swelling. Make sure Maddie has some sort of bug repellent on at all times. I also take liquid Zyrtec to help, as prescribed by my allergist.
Hope she's feeling better.

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
Oh poor Maddie When someone has an allergic reacion sometimes the histimines are activated throgh out the bod, the feet and hands are usually wher the swelling occurs becasue gravity forces the pressure downward and it pools in the feet and the hands. If we held our hands above our heads all day the sweling would only occur in the feet. I hope she feels better, looks like you should invest in avon skin so soft

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
Hi. I am new to this so not even sure if you will see this post since I have never done it before.
I am allergic to Masquitos. It was worse as a child. She will be fine. I would break out in huge hives, etc. Keep giving her the benadryl so she won't itch & also put calomine lotion on the bites (sorry about my spelling). Spray her w/ some type of bug spray when she is out & keep her indoors at dusk thru the night!!!!

Re: Severe swelling with mosquito bites
Same thing happens to me, and I just wanted to add that about 2 days after I get bites that blow up like that, I tend to feel pretty sick. I get exhausted and cranky, sometimes a little weak - it's like, all that swelling and constant itching takes a lot out of me. Watch out for that with your daughter so you can give her extra treats and hugs.
Hope she feels better soon.
