sex of a dog - does it impact their behavior?

I was wondering if there is a difference in behavior/personality with girl vs boy dogs?

is one more better with children, do you feel?

is one more rowdy?

any input?

Well boy dogs lift their leg when they pee. I also think girls are a little calmer. But once a girl dog goes through heat once she is horny and crazy for the rest of her life. So if your spaying get them spayed before the first heat.

I have an unneutered female pit and while she does get a little horny when she's in heat, she is NOT horny and crazy... or not anymore so than she was before she went into heat. But you should get your dog fixed because there's no need for more puppies in the world and it's the healthy thing to do for them.

Anyway, I actually find male dogs to be MUCH calmer than any female I've ever had. This could be arbitrary, but this is just what I've found.

Either way, puppies are a handful. They say that dogs are considered puppies for the first two years of their lives and I have to say, for our dogs, it was amazing. They turned two and it was like someone flipped a switch- they turned from rambunctious, destructive monsters to mild mannered, well behaved dogs overnight. I don't know if everyone had a similar experience but it still shocks me to this day. Sometimes I ask them "Who trained you when I wasn't looking?!" Chat Icon

Of all the dogs I've had...
my girl dogs have been smarter/quicker to learn than the boys...and more protective (Lilah now is nurturing/motherly to the other animals in the house...and she loves kids!)

but the boys have been more happy-go-lucky and easy going.

I think this is pretty accurate. However, I don't think you can really predict in advance. There are so many personalities traits that are independent of sex. Go for the one you feel a bond with regardless of its sex. That's really the best way.

I agree that the gender of dogs is not really relevant.

I've seen many an aggressive female and a docile male. I think clients tend to project certain traits or behaviors onto their pets depending on the gender.

An exception may be non neutered males of some of the more aggressive breeds but I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

Find a pup you bond with and go with it!

Re: sex of a dog - does it impact their behavior?

Personal experience: the female pups in my life are all VERY smart, willful, protective. Loveable too, don't get me wrong, but in all honesty the female dogs I have had/know well really can be bltches Chat Icon They can be stubborn as hell, too, and are a bit possessive of their people.

The male dogs I have had or know tend to be a bit easier to train and a little bit calmer/more easy going. This is totally anecdotal so take it FWIW!

That said, I love all my dogs/family's dogs! And A LOT depends on the dog's personality and training!

In general, the female protects the family while the male protects his territory.

Males are more "immature" than females for a longer period of time.

Those are "generalizations" and they may vary by breeds.

I think my next dog will be a female. Many males like to "mark"

Just FYI - my dad's female dog marks a TON. I think it has a lot to do with whether the dog is dominant or submissive, and also when they were fixed.

my female dog is very maternal. She takes care of stuffed toys like babies and is great with my son.

Re: sex of a dog - does it impact their behavior?

I am partial to female dogs.. I just cant take that shlong on a boy dog.. Especially when the red part comes out.. LOL.. But I love both but prefrence the female .. I fixed my female before her first heat and she is just perfect in everyway..

My neighbors pit bull is a male and has the same personality as my female maltese. Theyare exactly alike in so many ways.. so I dont think the sex has to do with temperment..

I've had boys and girls, the boys for the most part are a little playful but not nearly as temperamental as the females.
