Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
I'm not so sure how to explain this since both times it happened very quickly -
I was nursing DS, he was falling in and out of sleep and all of a sudden felt him "shaking" - like his body and head were moving back and forth on me - Both times i immed. grabbed him and said his name and both times he pretty much stopped immed. It happened so quickly that I am not sure that I am even correctly decribing what happened.
What is this? I want to call the ped but I'm not even sure how to explain it since it literally happened so fast and I also am not sure if i am over reacting? TIA

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
Hmmm. It sounds like it could be his muscles relaxing as he falls to sleep. My daughter (she's 2) shakes and her body parts jump when she *just* starts to fall asleep. Its pretty wild to watch. My other daughter doesn't do that. I hope it's nothing!
ETA: I just found this:
Twitches while falling asleep are called hypnagogic myoclonus, myoclonus being any sort of involuntary muscle spasm and hypnagogic referring to sleep. The twitches occur during very light sleep as the conscious brain gradually relinquishes control of the motor functions.

Thank you for responding at this time of night!
When you say shakes - do you mean her whole body kind of going back and forth quickly? It's not like he's shivering. He is 5mos and i have only noticed this happening tonight and one other time. But as soon as I grab him which by reflex is immed he stops so i haven't really observed it for long enough to explain it correctly.
thanks again.

It's like each body part (arms, fingers, legs, etc) jumps or twitches...but they all happen at once sorta. I guess it is hard to explain. It lasts a couple of minutes. Maybe when you grab him he becomes more conscious and that's why it stops?

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
It is not really twitching - It is just like he is shaking back and forth his whole bodyas if i was shaking him but the distance is very slight.
Is this a seizure symptom?
Thank you ladies - it freaked me out so much - it is like he is uncontrollably shaking - i wonder if i don't grab him if he would stop?
the worst part is b/c the time that i observe it has been so quick - and both times in almost darkness im not sure if i am even seeing it right which is why i am hesitant to call the ped.
thank you again for responding...i am sitting here like a lunatic doing google searches and staring at him on the monitor- i think i am just wayyyy over tired

We would all be googling like crazy too.
I would mention it to the ped on your next visit. He/She may refer you to a neurologist to confirm it's nothing. It does sound like what the previous poster found for you.
I know my niece was having twitching as a baby. My sister videotaped it & the doctor confirmed it was nothing. The girl is a 10 year old mini-genius & a soccer star now.

Thank you - I really appreciate it.
I am dying to call the ped but I just feel like I didn't observe it enough to really even explain it. I'm praying it never happens again but, if it does I will definitely call immediately. If not, I will mention it at the next appt...unless I drive myself too crazy today

For your own peace of mind it sounds like you should call your ped. It can't hurt. That being said - it sounds like what the previous poster said - about twitching before falling asleep. It must be scary to watch though!

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
My dd did something like that, and when i asked the peds about it they said it was normal. It was something to do with there nervous system developing. If they didnt do that then they are concerned.
call your peds anyway and just explain to them, im sure they will know what it is.

Thats called the Mooro Reflex, its quite normal. Its like that falling through a dream thing. It does go away, but can't remember when.

Jacob actually started doing this at around 10 months but it would happen when he was awake. The pediatrician referred us to a neurologist. He had an MRI and an EEG and it came back negative. Its funny because after he had these tests, the shaking stopped! Its a coincidence I am sure.

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
the way to tell the difference between seizures and involuntary movements is to hold the limb or body part that is shaking.. if it stops when you hold it it is not seizures. if i doesn't it could be.. a seizure would not stop when held.. so it sounds like you are ok! HTH

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
FYI: If it was seizure the baby would be Post-stictal afterwards and would be groggy and out of it! If you were able to wake him up right away it is not a seizure. Call the pediatrician and run it by him but most likely it is myoclonus reflex!

Re: Shaking/Twitiching? Has anyone's DC ever done this - I am very nervous...
Thank you ladies I really appreciate all the responses and reassurance. Next time it happens I will resist the urge to grab him immediately so I can observe what he is doing well enough to explain it to the ped
The reflex thing sounds more like twitching but I think he was more shaking...he did stop though as soon as I grabbed him...
Thanks again

sounds like his body relaxing but you can call the ped to make you feel better.. just keep an eye on it. it may just be your DC's body relaxing
