Shana's Birth Story
On Thursday, February 28th, Mark and I head to NSUH to get me induced. We arrive at the hospital at 8 pm. I was 1 cm dilated, 60% effaced and at -3 position (cervix still posterior). At 9:30 pm, a resident inserts the Cervadil. After a restless night with little sleep, I started to experience some stronger (but manageable) contractions around 5:30 am. I asked them to check me at 8:30 thinking there must have been some progress, but nothing. I was very soft though. By that time, my contractions had become painful. I had previously thought I had an incredibly high tolerance for pain. I was wrong. Very wrong.
At 9:30 am, they start me on Pitocin. After 20 minutes, I couldn’t bear the contractions. I had dilated to 3 cm in that short period of time, so they agreed to give me the epidural. It was pure bliss. By 12:30 pm I started to feel immense pressure. I knew I was fully dilated. When they checked me, they said I was ready to push. They warned me that first time moms usually take longer to push and it could take up to 2 hrs. of pushing. Well, the nurse and drs. (who I loved) took they’re sweet time setting up the room for me to push. Meanwhile, I was basically holding her in. I had to breathe out so as not to push too soon. At 1:10 pm, they told me I could begin pushing. 15 minutes later, they were frantically looking for my dr. because they said she was crowning. They had a back-up resident come in because they didn’t think my doctor would make it in time. She came running in at the last set of 3 pushes. I needed an episiotomy in order to get her out, but it was worth it. At 1:33 pm, Shana Blake entered this world! She was 7 lbs., 4 oz. and 100% precious. We are so in love with our beautiful daughter. We are blessed.
Recovery from the episiotomy is a little rough, but I’m healing. BF’ing is going well. She loves to eat!
