Shanghai

I know, I know... how random, right?

One of my best friends was transfered to Shanghai, China and DH and I have been contemplating visiting her there. We would be able to stay with her and only pay for flight (which isn't that bad) and food. Has anyone ever been?

Re: Shanghai

i've been. it's great especially if you've never been to china. since you'll have someone to stay with and show you around a bit i would definitely go. there's lots to do there and it's really interesting to see such a completely different culture.

Re: Shanghai

shanghai is a great city in china! You will not believe how HUGE it is! The buildings are SO modern and pretty clean (very different from Beijing).

I'm sure your friend will take you to the Bund - it looks like a mini paris or prague - it is where the Europeans lived during the SPheres of Influence era. The waterfront (across from the Bund) is a sight to see - the billboards are everywhere - but not really tacky - just Shanghai - if that makes sense. You might also see a group practicing Tai Chi as well there.

There is also a great Buddhist garden in Shanghai (yu-yuan?) the area around that Nanji? is great for little shopping, etc.

When I was in China, there weren't many ATMs - Shanghai was the only place, so if you don't feel comfortable taking cash ask your friend what the ATM situation is like.
