DH just told me he read that you should put the dog bed in the baby's room. So the dog begins to bond w/ baby and wants to protect it.

I hope this thread gets a lot of answers- this topic makes me very nervous. All I know so far is that we need ot send items of clothing from the baby home first for the dog to smell. I do not want to let the dog in the baby's room at all, at least not for awhile. She's a big time shedder.

I wish I had some tips, but we really didn't do anything special with Bama when Jackson was born. He just got used to Jackson, and they are the best of buddies now (Boxers are known to be good with children, so that's why we got one.)
Cesar Milan had an episode of preparing your dog for a baby. I'm sure you could find tips from him if you Google it.

I know he's a little controversial, but these seem like solid tips

I have 2 Pomeranians, I didn't do anything special with them. I showed them just as much attention as I always did. My Male Pom can be nippy at times so we keep an eye on him. He's our 1st baby so, he's learning to live with her. My Female Pom loves my DD. From the moment we brought her home. I think it has to do with he dogs personality.

1. Bring home an item of clothing that the baby has worn from the hospital
2. Let the dog sniff around the baby's room
3. Let the dog check out, sniff the baby when she comes home from the hospital so the dog knows that the baby is one of the pack
4. Do not yell at the dog for going near the baby, this may breed anxiety and jealousy
My dog has been WONDERFUL with my dd

I would definitely agree with these tips. In addition, we brought home new toys for all the dogs the day we brought DS home. At almost 6 mos old, we also have taught DS how to "pet nice" on the puppies. He does very well (HIGHLY supervised, of course) and the pups have bonded very well. DS is exposed to 7 dogs ( our 4, ILs 2 and my mom's 1), and they all get along famously.
Also, try to make sure that you continue to show love and affection and playtime with the pup. The less that is taken away from the pup, the less likely there are to be jealousy issues. In the first week, whenever I would feed DS (I was BFing) DH would go play catch outside with the dogs. It worked really well.
