Shark Week

It is shark week on the discovery channel, and being obsessed with sharks, I have been watching it all day. With that being said, hae any of you ever seen a shark in person, not in captivity? Even though I am obsessed with looking at them, it is one of my biggest fears!

Yes.

Once, while JetSkiing out at Democrat Point (Robert Moses) I saw a shark just under the surface - and it was NOT a dolphin.

Another time, diving in the Great South Bay we saw a small blue shark.

In Florida, snorkeling saw a bunch of nurse sharks.

And, of course, I've caught a few baby sand sharks in my life.Chat Icon

Since I was on a motorized vehicle...I was never afraid...more fascinated. Once, I saw a giant grouper and was following him around..Chat Icon

Don't worry...there's nothing in the shallow water. Anything we saw was at least 100 yards offshore.Chat Icon

See, I'm the swimmer who gravitates towards the other people...don't know them at all, but I figure it lessens my odds when there are more legs to choose from, you know?

Swam with small sharks in the Cayman Islands along with eels and stingrays. Very, very cool experience!

Yes, I did a shark feeding tour in Bora Bora. Basically, they tie a rope between 2 boats, you get in the water hold the rope and they chum the water and and you are watching them feed while holding onto a rope in the water. Scary but amazing experience.

We saw 2 sharks while scuba diving off the coast of Lanai (Hawaii). I was NOT happy. DH was fascinated by them & was thrilled.

Our dive instructor made a motion that one of the sharks was pregnant. All I could think of was how hormonal my sisters were pregnant & wanted to get out of there.

They were darting back & forth like they meant business.

Very scary.

Re: Shark Week

I remember seeing sand sharks below me when I was swimming at Breezy Point in the 70's. I think I was about 6 or 7 years old and hadn't seen Jaws yet, so I was more excited than scared. But I think sand sharks are harmless (to humans).
