Shellac vs Opi Gel vs Regular mani
Last year I tried the OPI Gel manicure and it ruined my nails after one application. I had to leave my nails un-manicured for 2 months until they grew back in. I have a ton of events this summer where I need my nails to look great. Will Shellac ruin my nails after one application too? Am I safer just getting a regular mani and touching them up myself?

Re: Shellac vs Opi Gel vs Regular mani
I did Shellac 2 weeks ago for the first time. I took it off yesterday (it was still perfect looking), and my nails are fine. A little dry, so I've been putting hand creme on them to moisturize.

My nails tend to be very dry and chip/peel easily. I had both gel and shellac and while they didn't ruin my nails they didn't last at ALL. Same goes for regular manis.

Re: Shellac vs Opi Gel vs Regular mani
I had Shellac twice and my nails are ruined.
BUT, the salon I went to FILED the shellac off after soaking and from what I've read, they are not supposed to file, just a light buff.
I'm not sure how my nails would have been if they had not filed.

Re: Shellac vs Opi Gel vs Regular mani
My nails SU CK!! they are like potato chips from years of getting gel, wraps, acrylics, etc. you name it.. I took them off a few years ago and decided ONLY manis..
I decided to try Shellac after hearing such great reviews (not just on LIF) and got them and the first place I got them didn't do a good job at putting them on because they lifted days later but still looked good..
When i removed them, my nails were SOO long and SOO strong which is a rarety for me! I then got a mani and waited about a week and then did them again (different place) and WOW.. he knew what he was doing and they lasted over 3 weeks and I only removed them because I was tired of the color.. I usually just let them breathe in between for a few weeks before doing it again but I will tell you that I have seen such a drastic change in my nails (in a GREAT way) that I plan on continuing to do it.
Another thing..the proper application is KEY to this working.. they should NOT have to file your nails other than to square them off.. you do NOT soak the shellac off.. you apply cotton balls with acetone and wrap them in aluminum.. I think that alot of these places pass off regular gel as the shellac and that's why people are running into problems..

I removed the shellac myself. No need to file. I just soaked a cotton ball with nail polish remover, held it on with foil, and left that on for 15 mins. The top layer of gel came right off, and then I used an orange stick to gently scrape off the rest. I did gently buff with one of those blocks, but very very little.
So I think if you take the shellac off at home, it is best.

Re: Shellac vs Opi Gel vs Regular mani
I had Opi and it KILLED my nails. The shellac didn't last as long, but my nails are in perfect condition after removing them myself. They may not have lasted as long because the technician did not file or buff my nails first, but that's also why there wasn't ANY damage. I went to Cactus and they were a bit pricey. I would definitely go back if I had an event to go to but it's not something I would have done every 2 weeks.
