This one of our favorite places!
DH and I stayed right in the park at one of the campgrounds. We think it's best to stay right in the park. If you don't camp, then they have cabins and a hotel. It's an incredible place! So much to do, so much to see. The actual Park has many programs. We went in the summer. Our favorite place is Big Meadows. If you got at night time, it's perfect for star gazing and to see hundreds of deer. Outside the park, we recommend Lurray Caverns, town of Front Royal, Canoeing down the Shenandoah river, etc. FM me with any specific questions!
