Shinnecock Nation and the casino proposal?
The Shinnecock Nation announced Wednesday that it will begin work this summer on a 76,000-square-foot casino located on its 800-acre territory just west of Southampton Village.
Thoughts? The Town of South Hampton and Brookhaven are already outraged over their billboards. I can't imagine the traffic nightmare this will cause or the damage to the environment but the laws surrounding Native land and uses are pretty clear. I would not be happy and I will not be happy if there is another increase in helicopter traffic.

My God that will be a traffic nightmare It's already a traffic nightmare out there in the summer. I feel bad for the year round residents of the east end. What used to be a quiet, tranquil place has turned into a commercial nightmare- on both forks. The north fork is the worst. It really is shame

Good for them. Let it be a traffic nightmare. They deserve to do what they want on their land.

ITA. The east end was never equipped to handle the amount of traffic it gets. I use to love going out east, 15-20 years ago it was a lovely experience. The last few years before we moved we stopped going out east at all, it's become intolerable. The last thing the east end needs is more development and any reason to draw more crowds.

Yes! When I started dating my husband around 20 years ago, we used to go out there often. His sister lived out there and it was so peaceful. The wineries were nothing like the are today. They were tiny and quiet and all the tastings were free. There were no buses, no limos, no bachelorettes with penis candy necklaces, no traffic. Now when we have to go out to his sister's we absolutely dread it. ESPECAILLY in the fall!!

I agree. My husband grew up on the north fork and it's changed so much. There is still a small town feel but that is because I have so much family out there. I really don't see how the roadways can handle additional traffic even on off season. Personally, I don't think the casino will end up on the reservation. I think the Shinnicocks are calling NYS bluff so that NYS will allow them to build in a more feasible location. So far, NYS has denied that and other claims to stolen lands.

I feel this way about the vineyard in Northport...I think it ruined the feel of the area. That used to be an old farm.
ETA: We never go out in the fall because of the f@cking pumpkin pickers!

Yes!! The wineries use to be this chill, quiet thing to do and NOBODY was there. It was awesome. You use to be able to drive out in the fall and actually enjoy the experience, now it's bumper to bumper traffic for 3 hours. It's really not the same anymore, like most things on the island it's been ruined by overcrowding.

Shinnecock Nation and the casino proposal?
It will be a traffic nightmare. But at the same time, NY has been playing games with them.
I don’t mind the development on the east end. It’s nice to be able to do ‘staycations’ or family things. Other states there is so much to do within an hour and we just have NYC. It’s nice to have more options close by. Plus it’s great for the economy to have a little tourism

The only issue with development on the east end is that it's not at all equipped to handle the influx of extra people and traffic. As nice as additional amenities and activities might be, the roads on LI can't tolerate more people doing more things, especially out east.
That's part of the reason we left, we wanted access to more places and activities without always being trapped in nightmare traffic. LI has really gotten intolerable over the last two decades, traffic everywhere is so much worse. It's too bad because it really takes away from what the island offers.

The Northport vineyard was built on an empty lot. It might have been a farm but I moved just around the corner from it in 1983 and it wasn’t a farm then. That was going to be something...:McMansions or the vineyard.

Shinnecock Nation and the casino proposal?
I think it's their land and they should be able to do as they please. I do think though they need to figure something out about the traffic because no one will be able to get there. They need to figure out some ferry service from the middle section of the island or something like that.

It will be a nightmare getting out that way with traffic. Maybe all the elite will be so sick of the traffic they will go back to NYC

Good for them. Let it be a traffic nightmare. They deserve to do what they want on their land.
That’s sort of where I’m at with this, too. But I know a lot of East Enders who are really being hurt by the traffic too.
LI by design is hard with traffic issues.

I agree. There's really no solution to the traffic, either. It's a very long, very narrow strip of land. On the mainland, you can get to a point from all 4 directions. On LI, you can only get to the Reservation from basically one direction.

Pesky geography! I went to Cape Cod once in the summer and that was brutal traffic too.
But tourism is good...
I still think LI will be underwater at some point.
