shoe molding?

DH and I are installing carpet ourselves in a small room upstairs. We're unsure of how to do the molding along the floors. DH found something about shoe molding. Does anyone know anything about this ? Do you have this in your home and if so do you have pics you could share? TIAChat Icon

Re: shoe molding?

I don't have any pics but we have a wide base moulding then a smaller cove molding at the base. It gives it a more finished look, but all the extra caulking is the worst!

Shoe moulding is very thin. I have it at the base of my kitchen cabinets. Sorry, I don't have an updated pic but it's only about an inch high. I would think for baseboard moulding you would want something at least 2" high.

Right, I knew that. We are going to put in thicker molding and ALSO shoe molding. Does that sound weird or is that what people do?

No, that is normal. My parents have that in their kitchen. When we redo the floors in the kitchen we will put it along the base of the cabinets.

I'm not sure I understand why you would want to do it with carpet though. Carpet is flush against the wall, the top molding should cover it.

Oh, OK, no it's not weird. Oh, shoot... I don't have it in my own house but I think my Dad has it in his. I'm having a brain-freezeChat Icon I can picture it but I don't know which house I'm always in has it... As a complete house geek I would go visit him tomorrow and get a pic of it for you but I'm giving birth early next week and I'm not allowed to drive by myself.

Bascially, you install the regular thicker moulding and then lay the shoe moulding in front of it at the base where the moulding and floor meet.

ETA: It usually is not done in carpeted areas and only done for hardwood floors so you can leave a small gap under the shoe moulding for seasonal expansion and contraction of the floor or if a vinyl tile floor was installed, there are some gaps and now you want them covered.
