Shopping around for health insurance, what should I look for in a plan if I am successful in TTC?
Actively TTC and have the option to change my health benefits at the end of every year.
I have a choice between a dozen or so plans and want to get the best for maternity care.
I know my current plan only allows one sonogram and I think I'll want more than that?
What else do I look for? What are some of the "must haves" for insurance during a pregnancy? What are some really premium things that some plans offer that would be a big 'ol bonus should I get pregnant?
TIA!
ETA: This is what my current plan says about sonos (not sure what it means and what's the norm?) Not covered: Routine sonograms to determine fetal age, size or sex

100% coverage at a hospital, or maybe only a $500 deductible.
At least 3 sonograms allowed. 8 week, 12 week and 20 week.
Just saw mentions of copays, wanted to add that we only pay a copay for sonos, not for every visit.

Hmm...
Are you sure it's only 1 sonogram? Most will have you have one at 12 weeks and another at 20 weeks at the very least.
Check what your copays are... For us, we don't have to pay a copay at all for our regular ob/gyn visits which is GREAT especially now that we're going to start going every week.
You can also see which plans cover what in terms of when you actually do give birth.
I would call and speak to someone about each plan's maternity benefits so you can get a really good idea... KWIM?

Totally agree...you want as much covered as possible. I have Empire and i have paid $40 my entire pregnancy. The only thing I pay when I have her is the $20 co-pay to the doctor for delivery and God forbid a specialist comes in then its a specialist charge. You have so many appts....or random times you may see the doctor you do not want to have to pay for all those visits. You need more then 2 sonograms....you don't know what your situation will be!
I am up to my 6th sono/ultrasound due to finding out so early and having to go back for an additional photo at my Level II due to her moving so much...you seriously never know!!

Okay..
That means they WILL cover anything that's deemed medically necessary.
For us, that meant 1 at 12 weeks, 1 at 20 weeks (which is called an anatomy scan - it's primary purpose is NOT finding out the sex... it's about taking all different measurements). We also got one at 34 weeks to make sure the baby is in the correct position...

Ahh well that makes me feel better. So as long as the dr. deems it medically necessary, I'm fine? But I'm probaby SOL if they can't tell the sex at 20 weeks?
(I feel like I'm completely jinxing my fertility by planning so much and discussing this!)

So that will mean you will get the Level II anatomy scan and NT scan. I think they mean any scans that are not deemed medically necessary, like 3D/4D.

i don't believe in jinxing!
you could always pay on your own for a gender determination sono... KWIM?
but i mean in general, i'd call and get details about all of the plans - you can even post them here and then we can all vote on which we'd choose or something!

Re: Shopping around for health insurance, what should I look for in a plan if I am successful in TTC?
I would shop for a doctor first!
Then talk to the doctor's billing manager and ask them for their opinion on the insurances you've narrowed down.

Good idea. I'll probably narrow it down and call them too.

Love it! I might just do that!
