Should I be worried? 1 year old-hunger strike?

Ok, so DS used to be a HUGE eater (at around 6 mos this kid would do 2 jars in a sitting). He's been on mostly table food from 10 months on.

He's now 1 and in the last week hasn't been eating much. His mood is the same, sleeping the same, etc.

He does have around 24oz of milk a day (I know we could lower this a little bit).

He also has water in the sippy too.

He hates being fed by a spoon and isn't eating much. If we're lucky, he'll get 1 chicken nugget. Or a half of a yogurt (he used to devour 1 whole one).

He loves his snacks still (veggie sticks, goldfish, baby mums, etc) but he can't live on this alone.

I try so hard to make sure he is getting a well-balanced diet but with him barely eating, its getting tough.

Is this norm? Is this a phase? Like I said, he's still happy, still sleeping, etc. He is getting over pink-eye but that really wouldn't effect a diet. Any help. Thanks!!

It's normal. I think its a control issue.

It could also be teethChat Icon

I agree on both counts. Kaydyn started refusing us feeding her around then because she wanted to do it herself. We ended up cutting up her food very, very small and letting her feed herself. She seemed to eat a little better this way. It took a long time, but at least she was eating.

see its not so much the control thing I think. We let him feed himself to begin with. We give him the chicken nugget, we give him the sandwich, we give him the kiwi pieces, etc. If it was the spoon thing, I'd understand. But even food he can feed himself he just mushes with his hand, throws it off the tray, etc. Doesn't make it to his mouth.

Kaydyn is a snacker too...she would eat goldfish or cereal all day long if we let her. We've had to start limiting those things so that she would eat better meals. Sometimes we get one good meal a day out of her, sometimes two. I figure when she's hungry she'll eat. We also only give her between 16-18 oz of milk a day. I think most toddlers go through the not eating much phase...as long as he's gaining weight and growing then I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks!! I know we should lower the milk and he's still happy and all. I just hope its only a phase. Don't get me wrong, if he isn't the biggest eater and DH & I am, I'll be ok with that. LOL

Welcome to the last 4 months of my life Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS has his good days and his bad days eating-wise. I have learned to stop fighting him. He will usually take at least one jar of food (sometimes it's a struggle but he gives in) per feeding. I offer him a few different things but often he just doesn't want to eat.

He's not a picky eater. He is usually open to trying new things, he gets a variety of veggies as well as meats, less fruit because we just don't have it in the house. He eats well at daycare, probably because he sees the other kids eating too. 24 oz. of milk is normal - DS gets between 16 to 20 oz. a day, and it doesn't seem to affect the amount of solid food he eats. He is also gaining well, and is tall for his age, and normal for weight.

I always just try to remember that their tummies are smaller than we think and if he is hungry he will eat! Chat Icon

same for miki so the way I see it is that she is getting 2 good meals a day, if she wants to skip dinner or have cereal for dinner for the 10th night in a row, so be it Chat Icon

LOL yea I feel the same way. We only give Kaydyn less milk because she sometimes has an issue with too much dairy in her diet. Our ped said they were fine with anywhere between 16-24oz milk per day.

Maybe he's teething. DS sometimes fights me now on things he used to love. He'll eventually eat it, but it's a struggle. He loves snacks like yogurt melts and goldfish type of crackers. I think he'd rather eat that sometimes than the food we offer as meals.

DS is 13 months and has been like this for at least two months. I offer him everything. He will always eat sweets. The ped said not to stress it and that is totally normal for a child this age. Chat Icon

Re: Should I be worried? 1 year old-hunger strike?

Maybe b/c his weight and growth are slowing down, his eating needs are less? I do agree, you should probably give less milk but in his case it doesn't sound like that's the issue. But try to aim more for 18 oz of milk and see what happens. I dont think it's anything to worry about though!

Does he like waffles or pancakes or toast with cream cheese, grilled cheese, etc? My DD will always eat these if put in front of her.

He did have toast with butter this AM. He only had like 3 bites but it was something.

Is there anything he really loves? When M&J (usually J) won't eat something - they will always eat certain foods - like bananas, yogurt, or cheese.

Re: Should I be worried? 1 year old-hunger strike?

Chels has been doing this for the past two months as well...we actually see her thinning out so it's worrying me a bit but not too much bc she was always a chub..but, she refuses to let me feed her she has to eat herself, and then is picky about what we put in front of her...I def think it sounds like a phase bc I think DD and ur DS are around the same age!
