i didnt, that stuff is expensive and if things dont work out in the hospital you can always send someone out for some.

Good question, I was wondering that too.
Guess I can send DH out if need be.

I wouldn't.
Think positive that everything with breastfeeding will work out great. It's the best feeling in the world to nurse your baby IMO.

ETA: And this comes from someone who ended up needing formula. You can always send someone out worse comes to worse. The first day or so are just colostrum anyway. Also sometimes the hospital gives out free diaper bags with formula in them.

I have to agree with monkeybride.
I didn't have any on hand, which was more incentive to keep going with the breastfeeding.

Someone could always run to the store if its needed. Sometimes the hospital sends you home with a diaper bag and there is some in there.

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

OK that what I thought you were asking...

I didnt buy any formula.... however...since RJ was jaundice...they had me supplementing with formula... ( I only did 1-2 feedings at night) the hospital gave me what I needed...and I was sent home with sooooo much...

Once I got my milk coming in...I rarely supplemented at night.... when I finally stopped BFing I sent DH to the store to buy some formula..

I started off with powder...but switched to RTF... Although powder is cheaper...its such a pita to make...and I never felt like I was making it right... I just feel better using RTF... and its so much easier...

Good luck with whatever you decide...Chat Icon

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

My SIL suggested that I get a small ready to feed (little mini bottles) just in case I have any trouble with my milk coming in. I just realized from reading the other posts that she lived out of state- so maybe the hospital didn't send her home with any. I feel better having at my disposal anyway.

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

I wish I'd had some on hand just in case. My milk never came in, and my hospital didn't give us many of those small bottles (only 2) so DH had to run out to get some when we got home from the hospital. I'd get a can of powder just in case. Ask your ped. what they recommend. If you don't need it, you can sell it on ebay since at least in NY they won't let you return formula, only exchange it for other formula.

I did, as I am due over the New Years period, I didn't want to be caught out without any in the house...

Now I think I just need to remember to buy some bottles Chat Icon

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

The hospital should send you home with some. Also just in case the baby takes formula in the hospital, you should try to use the same formula at home - otherwise it might upset their stomach a little bit.

I breastfed but Talia was in the NICU and sometimes needed to supplement with formula...I didnt have any at home - but my parents bought for me once I knew I needed some.

eta:racheeeee - even if you are BFing - you should have bottles in the house - this way if you pump and want someone else to feed the baby they can.

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

IMO, no. you do not need formula if you plan on bfing. Plan on being successful. Also, the hospital can send you home with some, if you want. We live in areas that have 24/7 access to stores for the most part. If it is really necessary you can send your husband out to get you some.
Also, if you sign up on all of the formula company websites they will send you tons of free samples! I did this and donated all of the samples to the food drive. It was great.

Re: Should I buy some formula Just In Case?

Thanks for that advice, I have checked and the sterilizer that I bought comes with 3 avent bottles. I have bought a medala mini pump...but the midwives here have suggested that we don't pump for a month at least...they also suggest savoy cabbage for sore boobs...

Ah the British...they speak the same language, but its always so different!

Sorry...about the cabbage, they suggest that you put it on your sore boobs, not for eating!

I don't believe they will send you home with anything here at NHS Hopsitals, we have to bring our own diapers and cotton wool! Thats National Health for ya....on the other hand, I don't have to pay a penny for any of my health care, so I guess it all works itself out.
