Should I just assume I didn't get the job?
My second interview was on January 4th and when I asked about timing, she told me they'd try to get in touch with me before I left for Israel (January 9th). Well, it's January 23rd and STILL no word. No rejection letter either though, and I know they spoke to at least 2 of my references last Tuesday, January 16th. I know it's the federal government, which entails a lot of bureaucratic red tape, but I'm starting to lose hope.
So... what should I think?

I wouldn't assume anything until you speak to someone there. Perhaps they were waiting to hear back from you when you returned? In either case, good luck and I hope for the best for you!

Well if they said they'd get in touch with you by the 9th but they only got around to calling your references on the 16th, I would give them more time. It sound like they are behind schedule by at least a week.
I think you got this job so don't lose hope yet!

I agree. I doubt they would check your references if they were not interested in you.

That's what I keep hoping for in the back of my mind, but I don't want to cling to some false hope, and I want to move on already if I didn't get it and start looking seriously for something else. This is so frustrating...

I agree.... I'd say if you don't hear from them in another week, then maybe follow-up to check on the status. Good Luck!

They are probably just behind. It happened to me and I got the job.
Don't worry. If they didn't want you they wouldn't bother checking your references.

I would not assume that at all! Sometimes doing a final shortlist can take ages! Why not just pick up the phone to check in with them!! Just a friendly hi asking them for an update!!!

Re: Should I just assume I didn't get the job?
Definately not. There could be timing issues between the recruiter touching base with the hiring manager, etc. If they have actually contacted a reference or two that means that you are still under consideration. I would add two weeks to the date that they gave....
Especially since it's a government job. Stay tight. Call next week to follow up or possibly Friday.

I would do the same. Especially since they gave you a timeframe of the 9th...you should definitely call.
