should i switch formulas??--please help!

DS is 7 weeks old. he uses similac advance. never had any problems with it. lately his poop has been a little more watery and has a slight green tinge to it. when he passes gas it has been VERY smelly! no more or less than usual for the poop or gas.

within the last week or so he has been spitting up a lot. i don't know if this is because he is getting older and his digestive track is getting more mature, or if he could have sensitivity to the formula. i don't want to switch it if it's normal, but i don't want to leave him on it if it's not. he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable in any way and he is not "throwing up" or projectile vomiting---it just kind of pours out of his mouth as if he had been holding onto it in there. it happens anywhere from 1-10 minutes after feeding and is certainly not consistent.

what do you think? is this normal for a 2 month old? i have no reference from which to judge it. could it be reflux? i will ask the ped at the next appt or sooner if it gets worse. i'm not worried about it, i just want to fix it if it's not normal.

thanks for any advice you can give!

I would call peds before switching formula. If there is a problem and you switched the formula the peds wont know whats causing the problem.. if it was the 1 st formula or second that you tried. Best bet is to discuss with peds and let them suggest what to do, they may want you to switch to a specific brand.

I would maybe wait a lil bit. My DD kinda had the same prob w/ the advance. Shes almost 6 months and doing much better with it now. Hes so lil and his body is goign through a lot of changes. Speak to your ped about it.

Definitely talk to your ped about it. My daughter had the same issue and they switched her Similac Alimentium.

I would definitely give the doc a call and just let him know what is going on. Don't switch it on your own though. I have a feeling they may want you to try something else. Kiss that little cutieface for me. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Call the ped. about it. They are accustomed to getting such calls and you may as well have their guidance on the matter. Don't wait, in case your child is uncomfortable.

Re: should i switch formulas??--please help!

i dont know if this helps at all, but Raylee has HORRIBLY smelly farts when she has formula... the nurse at the drs office said this is normal in some children...i thought maybe she was taking after her daddy... however, once my MIL smelled one of her little farties, she said we should definitely talk to the dr about it again... im going to ask at her next appointment...

Re: should i switch formulas??--please help!

Well my ped told me that one of the signs of reflux is smelly farts. That and spitting up obviously (although my son never spit up a lot).

My ds didn't do well on advanced, so he's now on similac alimentum and doing great.

I wouldn't switch without talking to your ped first at the next appointment. It could be the formula, it could be reflux... your ped will know more.

Let me ask you this, does your son arch his back a lot and put his head back? does he not like to be on his back, especially after a feeding? does he wake up shortly after a feeding a little bit irritated? does he squirm when feeding him? These are all signs of reflux as well. Chat Icon

Carol, why don't you try giving him a little bit of chamonile tea throughout the day to see how he reacts it to it. Its a soothing tea, so if there is further spittin-up or green poop, it could be that he is lactose intolerant and I would speak to the ped about possibly switching the formula. My nephew used to constantly spit up and it ended up being reflux, SIL switched him to Similac Sensitive and the problem went away. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i would talk to your pediatrician about it before switching. he or she might have some ideas about what kind to switch to... or they may tell you not to worry about this.

no he doesn't do any of these things! he doesn't seem uncomfortable or in pain at all.

and the stinky farts, spitting up and "green" poop aren't consistent--he didn't have any of these things today!

thanks sylvia about the tea advice...i'll look into that!

The whole spitting up thing... is it a good amount all at one time?

My ds does this every once in a while. It's only happened like twice and he's 8 weeks old. My friend calls it snorkeling. Like it all of a sudden just comes erupting out of their stomach at one time. Chat Icon

Is it like that? If so, that's normal and bound to happen here and there.
