Should magazines specify when a model has been airbrushed?

Saw this on another board and thought we could talk about it over here:

"I recently came across the online portfolio of a man who does celebrity photo retouching for a living. I never realized just how many changes are made to those pictures. I always thought airbrushing meant removing zits, not complete body shape "remodeling." I understand more deeply now the issue with teens trying to live up to unrealistic body images. Call me sheltered.

My professional background is in newspapers, where if we altered a photo other than cropping it and adjusting brightness and contrast, our ethics policies required that we label it "photo illustration." Should readers demand that magazines hold their photos to the same standard?"

Here's some examples (mouse over to see before/after):

Destiny's Child

once - boob job

Serena Williams - major waist and face changes

complete face rebuild

took 20 years off her face

complete torso restructuring

disappearing tattoos, eye color and skin tone changes

major face and hairstyle alteration

face and clothing alteration

"More pictures can be found by going back a directory on those URLs, but be warned that some were published in men's magazines (string bikinis, arm over breast, etc). They actually show body changes even better than the ones I've linked, but are probably not safe for viewing on a workplace computer so I won't direct link them here."

This post with the links was certainly an eye opener for me.

WOW! I had no idea that so much retouching was done for these photos. DH just said that while one of our friends was working on the Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign, he always used to complain about how much he had to work to get rid of the model's freckles.

Wow - wouldn't it be nice for all of us to get instant boob lifts, wrinkle reduction, no cellulite or bulges. It is a shame, I think how much air brushing is actually done because both men and women worship these supposed ideals.

Oh yea, just about every magazine does this. I will never forget the interview on Stern with Nicole Richie when she posed for Maxim and she said too they gave me boobs!!! they touch up every zit, birth mark, freckle, any imperfection its disgusting!!!!!

I assume they are all airbrushed anyway. No one looks that perfect.

What a huge difference! I knew it was done, but didn't realize the extent. I've photoshopped a cousin's wedding pictures before I showed them to her. I took off some of her arm to make her look thinner & told them that I had played around with them but didn't show her the originals.

I'd like to send this guy every photo ever taken of me.
