I don't think downtown should be built either. I think it should be a memorial park.
I completely agree, ashes were buried there.
that's what I feel. It should serve as a cemetery
yeah just like oklahoma city.

I feel like there is plenty of places to build in the US, to build on land that is below sea level and being supported by a levy system seems unnecessary. Florida does not have levy system.
I don't understand the 9/11, we build in NY again argument. That was a man made act of terror. That was an assult. That is avoidable.
This was us versus nature, and nature won. There was no stopping it. If everyone in the city would have evacuated, they would still be jobless and homeless.
Extremely well said. I voted "no"...it is below sea level. NY is not and as far as I know neither is CA, so that point doesn't apply.

Re: Should New Orleans be rebuilt
Its going to take a longggg time, but New Orleans should definitely be rebuilt - im sure between the war, this natural disaster and everything else going on - cost of living is unfortunatley going to continue to rise because of it too.

Re: Should New Orleans be rebuilt
I think it's ridiculous not to try and rebuild in some fashion. As people are saying, should we not rebuild California because of earthquakes still to come? The Midwest because of tornados? Yeah - NO is below sea level - and Long Island is an island that is right at sea level - if the "big one" hit here, many parts of LI would be devasted too - should we not rebuild? The best that can be done is to learn and rebuild with that in mind the way that construction is different in Florida post Hurricane Andrew.

Being knowledgeable about construction. I think they need to bulldoze everything, bring in suitable material so its above sea level, and then start to rebuild.

I was just thinking the same thoughts about LI and I know I would want it rebuilt. I don't even think I paused to vote to rebuild NO

I think they should rebuild. This time they can take their time and design it properly.

Re: Should New Orleans be rebuilt
I agree with two other posters- You can't compare LA with NY N.O. is below sea level, while, for the sake of the people living there, it would be wonderful to rebuild, you can't fight mother nature- it's impossible. Look over the course of the Earth's exisitence and how the continents have shifted and sank- this is part of a natural progression. If we can rebuild with suitable materials, then sure, do it- but I think that this area is not to be as strong as it was. My heart goes out to those people and I understand that this is their home and their lives, I just don't think that the time and money it's going to take (Years and billions) is going to be worth going back to a place that will never truly be what they had, and it doesn't guarantee it will hold up.

Re: Should New Orleans be rebuilt
I think they should salvage what they can, but I don't think they should build it back up again. This same kind of natural disaster could easily happen again and destroy the city again. And if they DO rebuild, the REALLY need to improve their protection from this type of flooding. Kind of hard to do when you are below sea level.

The cost of this would be astronomical
To answer why the levees weren't designed for a category 5, it was probably also due to $$$. Most things can be designed to a higher standard, but aren't because of $. On a smaller scale, the drainage in city streets here (and other places) are not designed to handle the worst storm we would ever have, but the bad ones we typically have (usually what's called a 5-year storm). So when we get one that is more intense, we experience some flooding. To design for a 100 year storm (the worst on record in most areas....) is extremely expensive and it is a hard sell. People do not want to hear that their taxes are going to increase a large amount to pay for the design and construction of structures for a storm that may not happen in their lifetime.
I hope New Orleans rebuilds, but they have ahuge job on their hands. I was there in December and their stormwater system seemed to have trouble handling even a regular rainstorm.

Of COURSE it should be rebuild. If anyone has ever been there it is a WONDERFUL City. If NY City went through this, I would want it to be rebuilt. Like someone said what is Loiusianna with New Orleans.

Re: Should New Orleans be rebuilt
New Orleans is one of the oldest cities in the U.S.. I would guess that the people who have lived there all their lives and have family histories there will want to rebuild. And I am sure they will...just better. I had heard that the levees were supposed to be strengthened a couple of years ago and weren't, which is why the flooding was so bad. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't rebuild, as another poster said, could you imagine not rebuilding Long Island if there were massive destruction? Which there could be, we are already seeing a lot of beach erosion and a good storm could do major damage to coastal areas on LI.

Plenty of places to build? it's so easy for us to say that..to us it might just be another city, to the new orleaners, it is a history, a culture....I loved every minute I was down there - wasn't there a massive earthquake in San Francisco that destroyed most of the city.. We rebuilt San Francisco... it's 2005 I am sure there a better ways to rebuild that city and the levees to make it more tolerant to hurricanes.
Again, like I said before, there isn't a Louisiana without a New Orleans.....
