Should the door be left unlocked?
We rent in a single family house, but we only have use of the first floor and the basement. At some point BEFORE we lived here (so, 3+ years ago) the upstairs was an illegal apartment.
If you look at my house, we have a front door, when you come inside the entryway, there is a door into our living space (an inside door) and then the stairs upstairs (which is left unlocked).
So, my landlord thinks that the front door, the only one with the deadbolt, should be left unlocked. I know from experience that I could pick the lock on the door into our house with a hair pin (I did it )
He says it is communal (HUH?!?) space and he should be able to come in the front door to go into the upstairs.
So I said then buy me a deadbolt for our door and he says he doesn't have to
He is well aware that 5 nights a week I am alone with a toddler

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
No, the door should not be unlocked.
He has two choices-get you a deadbolt for your door, or USE THE KEY for the outer door when he wants to go upstairs. Not to mention, he would opening himself up to squatters that could walk in your front door and go live upstairs and him not be able to do anything about it!
I would be a little concerned that he is making a point that he wants to come in at any time. It would make me nervous that he is going into my apartment when I'm not home. I would probably buy my own deadbolt and put it up (but it is his responsibility to provide you with security on your door).

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
I agree with Neener. We live in unsafe times.
Actually, with my clients at work I have to fill out a form every so often that their main entry way as well as front door is locked and secure.
This is tracked and can be questioned in an audit by the state.

He already let himself into the basement last summer with the Slomins guy. Poor Chris was asleep and I was out running an errand. Chris heard them and thought someone broke in and came flying down the stairs Chris got his own lock after that
He claims he doesn't have a key, that we have the only one

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
I would just ignore him and lock it and if he doesnt like it then oh well, like you said then he needs to get you a deadbolt.

Well then when he gets you a new deadbolt for your door, then you will give him a copy of the key for the outer door.
Who is this guy? I want to smack him upside the head for you!

Ignore him and lock your door. If it's THAT big of a deal for him to turn a freakin' key, then it will worth it for him to put the deadbolt on your door even though 'he doesn't have to'

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
do you have a lease? If so I's show him the clause that is standard in most leases that he needs permission to enter the premises unless an emergency and if he enters the basement again without permission call the cops.

Yes, we do.
He is aware of it, he actually owns several rentals, he is just old and forgot to tell us about hte appointment. He didn't see my car, so he figured we weren't home
I told him if he let himself upstairs without telling me, I wouldn't even go up to find out who was up there, I'd just call the police

yes, there should be a deadbolt. ugh.
When I lived in an apt in a house, everyone who lived (incl. owners) there had keys to the outsiode door & we had the only keys to our unit.
Leaving it unlocked is dangerous. I would just give him a copy of the outdoor key.
You can't really prevent him from coming in, he owns the house & if I understand correctly, the stairs & upstairs are not part of the area you area renting.

That would be nasty. I'm pretty sure it was gutted when the Town found out it was an illegal apartment
I don't want to keep him from his own house, I just don't want to have to leave my front door unlocked.
I'll see if he will take a key

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
no my parents have a two family house - there is a porch after you walk in the door with deadbolt and then you go the door to right for the upstairs apartment, or you go right to my parents apartment. the front door has always been locked. i got locked out once and was able to get in without a key. i think the more locks the better.

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
I have the same layout (except my downstairs is occupied by someone- Hi Corinne!!!). I will leave it unlocked if I am home and run to the grocery store and back. Otherwise it is almost 99% locked. Who is to say someone can't be waiting for you behind that door when you get home one day?

I would make him a copy and tell this should solve the problem.
There is no way I would leave the door unlocked.

Re: Should the door be left unlocked?
It needs to be locked. An inside door is not as strong as an outside door. When someone builds an apartment complex, they put steel doors on the apartments. But when someone converts a house into apartments they don't. Therefore, you need the outside door locked, and if someone else lived upstairs, I'd want a deadbolt on my door too.
