SHown appreciation at work
do your boss reconize your hard work? for me, other people recognize the hard work. i've been at work at 7 the past 2 days. i came in early on my own time. the department that i had to do reclasses for(i work in the accounts payable department) appreciated me coming in early. my boss sees me but doesn't say anything. she says the other department coudl've done it.
does your boss recognize your hard work?

Re: SHown appreciation at work
nope! i have a different kind of job, where there are sooo many of us and there's always a handful of people who cause us ALL to get treated like 5 years olds... i get very tired of being treated like that because of others - i'm competant, responsible and always do what is asked of me. all i want is to be treated as such, i don't even need appreciation!

no, they focus on any and everything that is WRONG, and nothing that is right.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
Sometimes I will get "thank you" or "good job" from my supervisor or the owners. But if there's a big project, I am expected to get the job done - if it means coming in early, staying late or bringing work home or all 3.

When I was an assistant they would send flowers for admins day. But other than that it's rare to even get a thank you. It's just expected that you go above and beyond the call of duty.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
yeah, i get appreciation for coming early or working late - its called overtime.
if i do a good job on something, my supervisor or her boss will say something about it, but other than making me feel good, it doesn't mean much because the only way i can get promoted is by taking a test.
ETA: big project or not, i am never expected to work more than i can, it's a county job. our motto seems to be: it'll get done when it gets done.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
I definatly get shown appreciation for my hard work. I must say I am lucky at my job. We get cash awards, and get to leave early alot if the work is done. Plus my boss is great with recognizing a good job.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
No - and I just realized it this week. I was responsible for a very important project in 2007, which I worked late nights and weekends on just to make sure it went live on time. It was a huge success because of my sole efforts and this week I received the same bonus as I have for the last 5 years. I feel like they didn't acknowledge my achievement and I know my enthusiasm about this job is going to be affected.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
As one of two programmers in a company that has limited computer experience, I don't get many compliments from the boss as I do for the other employees for whom I create software for. Of course, their appreciation is based solely on what my work does for them, not necessarily the effort involved. Since just 6 people out of 300 in the company have any knowledge of programming, I can't go up to someone and say, "It took 5 hours to create that algorithm to bring up specific customer information so that it uses less server processing power", and expect them to thank me for that However, since my job is to make other employees' jobs easier and more efficient, it is nice to hear positive feedback from them and to see the software put to use. Too bad that doesn't necessarily translate into financial compensation. :P

Re: SHown appreciation at work
Yes and no. When I am doig things above & beyond and all the things that no one else wants to do I NEVER complain (unlike others here)
On a daily basis my managers do not notice and have the nerve to ask "what keeps you buys? Ummm riite!
But recently when I least expected it I got a really nice praise (monetary) award from management. Tht took me by surprise and made me feel better about doing the grunt work of the team.

Re: SHown appreciation at work
My direct boss says he appreciates what I do. But that doesn't stop him from completely disregarding my opinion most of the time. I think he appreciates it most when I'm a mindless drone that just does what he wants me to do even though I know it's probably fruitless and inconsequential.

Agreed. I think most computer type jobs are largely thankless, mostly because people don't understand or care about the behind-the-scenes. What annoys me is when people KNOW the amount of time, aggrivation, and work that went into a large rollout of a new program or something and they can only b*tch about it. Makes you wonder why you do it sometimes, doesn't it? It's the burden we bear.

My old boss was wonderful with showing appreciation for hard work, taking initiative and putting in late hours, etc. I felt very taken care of...but she just left
