Sick and tired of WASTING MY TIME
Anyone else feel like you teach your students and a few days later it's COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN!???!
I must have spent A MONTH on adding and subtracting fractions- I got to a point where ALL OF MY STUDENTS knew how to do it- today, half of them actually added the numerator AND denominator- I was stunned. I wanted to roll up all of their papers and hit myself over the head!
Another example- this morning going over what an adjective is. They all got it! They were throwing examples left and right!
This afternoon as I'm writing HW on the board, I get, "Excuse me, what's an adjective??"
I seriously feel like I WASTE MY TIME

Re: Sick and tired of WASTING MY TIME
You are not alone!!!!! I cannot tell you how many times this happens with my freshmen and my sophomores. This morning I started the Russian Revolution and we mentioned it in the last chapter with World War I and they had no clue what I was talking about!! The best is when my sophomores who I had last year tell me that I didn't teach them something last year when I did. I'm actually bringing in a handout I gave out last year to prove to one of the kids I did teach it!!!!! Kids!!!! And they're supposed to take a regents!

Re: Sick and tired of WASTING MY TIME
You're totally right, it really feels like a huge waste of time!!! They have no retention of information or skills AT ALL. They "learn" a concept, seem to understand it, practice it and go over it a million times.... and then the next day you ask them the most basic question about it, and they look at you like they have no clue what you're talking about.
The reason? They don't study!!!!! They don't go home & look at their notes, or bother to re-read things EVER. So we could be the best teachers in the world, if they don't care about it & study it & think about it on their own time, they will never really learn it, that's the bottom line.
It drives me NUTS & is one of the things in this profession that is extremely discouraging, because we have no control whatsoever over it.... then WE'RE the ones getting blamed when they fail. It makes me sick.

The best in when I teach them something, then give them HW on it that afternoon, and a kid comes up to me after I give out the worksheet and claims he never saw problems like that before!

lol and it's at that point that I want to put on my ipod, put my feet up on the desk, and close my eyes. I mean, it's not like that would make a difference anyway since they aren't motivated enough to listen when I'm actually teaching! Ugh I'm such a downer this week, I can practically SMELL the april break!
