sigh... where do I begin?
my son just asked what the *N* word means, and WHY it's a bad word..
How do I go about explaining this besides: it's a derogatory term that carries with it much hatred and disgust...
yet is used as a slang term..
he wants to know WHY... and I can't answer it.

Where did he hear it being used and under what circumstances?
I would turn it around and ask him why HE thinks it is a bad word and explain it from there. Sometimes kids are looking for a much simpler answer than we think we need to give.

Maybe you can just say something like it is a word that was invented to make certain people feel really badly about themselves. It was designed to hurt specific people very deeply and take away their dignity. You may hear it in music or in certain movies, but it is not a word I would ever feel comfortable with you using.
I'm not a parent, but I dread the day I have to have this conversation with my kid. It's so sad, like a loss of innocence.

why it's a bad word.. I just mentioned in my post 'yet it's used as slang.' which thankfully DS doesn't know yet
