Silda Standing by Spitzer
I know it is political..blah blah blah But I am so IRKED that Silda stood by Spitzer yesterday while he publicly apologized.
I really wish a woman would NOT stand up there and be publicly humiliated even further.
Does anyone agree?? I just dont think she is serving as a good role model..granted I dont know her entire story, but I would NOT stand there while my DH "apologized"

Re: Silda Standing by Spitzer
Who knows what's going on in their relationship?
It's possible that some women "accept" what their husband's do in order to gain something (fame/power/etc...)
eh hem...HILLARY?!?!?
ETS: I completely agree with you - I wish the wives did not "stand by their man" in the light of such controversey, but what choice do they have?

I agree that Hillary did it because she had her own political aspirations for the future...not so sure about Silda
I just think it would make a hell of a statement if a man got up there without his wife Very easy for the wife to say "Nice hun..you got IN the mess and IN the bed..now get out yourself!"

Re: Silda Standing by Spitzer
*I* wouldn't be standing by my husband in that situation -- but that's me. Apparently, it's a good thing I'm not married to a slimeball politician...
One of the wonderful things about being a woman in America in the 21st Century, though, is that we can make our own decisions. This is her choice to make. I'd sure make a different one, but who am I to dictate what she should do? It's not my marriage...

They are not without choices and options. No one (I hope!) is holding a gun to their heads and making them stand there next to their husbands at these press conferences or preventing them from leaving.
ETA -- This is assuming the allegations are true, of course. If she honestly doesn't believe they are true, then that's a different story.

I agree that no one is without choices....esp the mother of his 3 daughters!!! He is on a federal wiretap AND he apologized...why would he apologize if it isnt true?

To be honest, I believe politicians fall into a very strange "group" (similar to a "members only" type of affiliation) where there are codes to live by. It's a "smaller" network than we think, and I'm sure if she left him up there apologizing on his own - her career and future would be destroyed. Along the lines of a Scarlett Letter...
I know it sounds very "conspiracy-ish" but there's just something really creepy about it...making me think "Why else would she "stick around?"
She's a Harvard Law Graduate with a successful career in Corporate. She then translated her background into Charity work when she decided to become a first lady...she's grown accustomed to this politician's wife lifestyle, and I'm sure there are repercussions for it...should she leave.

Re: Silda Standing by Spitzer
While I think it's unforgivable, I don't know what their marriage is about.
Maybe that's their arrangement and he just got caught by the public.
I admire her for her courage though to stand there even though it's humiliating.
She's tougher than you might think. It's much harder to stand there than to disappear.

ITA!!! In my opinion I think these women are enablers who encourages these behaviors which is very disgusting. There is no way on God's earth my DH would get away with such nastiness. I would be filing for divorce right away.

Exactly--Maybe if women stood up for themselves it would be a better place to raise secure girls.

Very true! Also, I cannot imagine standing next to Dh with an admiring look as if he did something wonderful. My dh knows I don't stand for mess.
Also, I think this is sending a message to his 3 girls that it is okay for their future husbands to cheat on them and it is okay for them to stand my these pigs proudly.

Just think about the example she's set for her daughters. At very impressionable ages.

This is exactly my point. I think she might be a strong woman in her own right. However, I totally disagree with this society's "stand by your man" mentality which probably forced her to do it

I also don't think she is necessarily standing up for him. She's by his side..the news just broke..her head is swimming. She doesn't know her azz from her elbow yet or what she wants to do.
We can't possibly put ourselves in that spot. Sure we say, we would leave him, kick him to the curb and just let him be there by himself. But obviously, she loves him. He is the father to their daughters.
She has to process the info and decide what she is going to do.
She is standing there because it was the right thing to do for the public, but when the dust clears, she will make the decisions for the rest of her life and her family.
McGreevey's wife did just that.

I don't think I would have been able to stand there without full on beating the crap out of my husband. I would do my best to work out whatever OBVIOUS problems we had - in private. However, I would not be able to stand next to him while he apologized for something that I'm certain he wasn't sorry for.

Re: Silda Standing by Spitzer
The problem is that it's fake just like most politicians are. Whether or not they work out their problems later on you know she's not going home giving him back rubs because the poor baby is under so much stress. I'm not saying she should be slapping him around in public but come on no matter how much progress women have made I feel stunts like this take us a few steps back. I certainly would not want to teach my daughters it's ok to take this kind of abuse.

I would think not being there makes a bolder statement and one that hasn't been made before!
I'm sorry I don't believe she has any courage. She's just doing what she's been taught as "the right thing". She's like a stepford wife, manufactured, doesn't actually have an independent thought.

They are both from big money, so I don't think it's for the money.
I'd like to think I wouldn't be standing next to DH if that was me, but who knows what I'd do when faced with it. Especially if I'd only heard about it an hour before and was trying to process it all while the PR people were trying to salvage DH's career and figure out what to say in his statement.

McGreevey's wife did just that.
I agree with this.
Lord only knows what has been happening. Not only is she dealing with infidelity, but she is also dealing with the prospect of her husband being INDICTED on FEDERAL charges.
this has HUGE implications that goes way beyond the whole "cheating is terrible" feelings. The father of her girls also has to look his OWN DAUGHTERS in the face.
I don't think her standing there says anything to those girls that cheating is right. Her family is in an uproar like NO OTHER. NONE of us here can imagine what is going on.
I told my dh yesterday...it's one thing to cheat and have it be a private matter. but when millions of people are now aware...and "get" to sit in judgment as to the who/what/when/where/why and how...it's got to be pain MAGNIFIED tenfold.
I don't think we need to look at ANY of these woman as a blueprint for what to do. Standing up there doesn't make it right....at least I don't see it as any type of endorsement of the behavior.
When I saw her up there, I saw a crushed woman trying to do what she thought was right under the circumstances. Keeping her backbone up for the public. for her daughters. showing her girls that it takes a stronger woman to stand up than to cower. trying to salvage SOME of the good left in her family by not turning this into an even bigger scandal.
Spitzer made mistake that approximately 50% of the population makes. His position only makes it WORSE. It's really an awful and FRIGHTENING time for their family right now.
Yes it is HIS mistake. but his whole family is paying for it.
why can't we let THEM hash it out, instead of condemning this woman when in reality NONE of us know what went on BEFORE he stepped on stage or AFTER.
