Silver nitrate to dry up umbilical cord/belly button

I took DS to the ped. the other day and mentioned his belly button is still oozing alittle bit and gets crusty. He put a chemical in it to help dry it up, called silver nitrate. He said there was still a piece of the umbilical cord in there. Now his belly button inside is very red. Is this normal?

we had to have that done for DS too. My ped told me to wipe it daily wih alcohol wipes and it was ok in a few days. DS belly button still looks black compared to the rest of his belly. It almost looks stained. It has lighted up A LOT, but still at 8 months its black. But the Ped said that is normal too.

It looked gray inside but not so much today (2 days later). It looks like the gray gook is pushing out and clearing up. But was the skin inside pink, almost raw looking after? It looks like the stuff burned off a layer of skin. The ped. told me it doesnt hurt but I guess that's what the silver nitrate does.

They did this for DD as well and it fell off within 4 days. She had her umbilical cord for 3 weeks.

Yes, DD's belly button looked very red and raw after the silver nitrate, but it healed wonderfully. She is 4 months now and she has a perfect "innie" bellybutton.
