Re: Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?

PLEASE READ THE UPDATE FROM THE OP -

ITS NOT A FREE EDUCATION/BENEFITS PAID BY THE CITY OR THE STATE. the education scholarship and some of the health benefits come from the PBA - The Widows & Orphans Fund and other charities that the COPS PAY INTO. That means it's being funded by the police officers - not the taxpayers. I don't know how FDNY is,but I'm sure it's similar, but every paycheck money comes out of DH's check to the W&O, an O Scholarship Fund, and his PBA dues, amongst other various charities that he voluntarily contributes to out of his check - charities run by the city of new york.

ITS NOT FREE SALARY - "the" salary - is really the pension - 50% of the salary. Plus life insurance and whatever 401K and 403B the officer had payed into during his career, just like any person dying for whatever reason.

As per Wikipedia - since December 25, 1806, the NYPD has lost 780 police officers in the line of duty.

If the city and the Mayor keep taking away benefits - of all kinds - from the future police officers, lowering the standards for entry, lowering the pay, what kind of people do you think are going to apply for this job? Not the kind that have honor and a sense of duty and responsibility, it is already starting. There are too many new NYPD hires already that are 2 shades short of being
perps themselves because of lower hiring standards. They do nothing, they don't care about what happens to people - it was the classes after 2009 - the lower pay class, the class where you could still have misdemeanors and get hired.

If you think it's excessive - ok, it's your opinion, as everyone is entitled to, but I sure hope you don't have a PBA card or anything of the like to get out of a summons in your wallet.

Yeah, I was going to say something similar, although probably not those specific professions that you listed. I'm pretty sure, for example, unless you mean fighter pilots in the military that pilot is a pretty low-risk job.

Not commercial airlines--small aircaft piloting (private jets, air taxis, etc) is very dangerous.

not if you know what you're doing
the statistics of dying in a plane are excessively low
my dad's a pilot for the nypd..prior to that for the coast guard

i think the solution to this is that all cops/fd/teachers quit their jobs and leave the rest of the population to figure it out

Yes, really, wouldn't it be festive if my DH and the rest of the NYPD went on strike? I'd make sure my car was packed and I was far away.

Someone should take Bloombergs pension away!

I am sure Bloomberg doesn't get a pension for being mayor. The man is noble enough to only make $1 a year to do an extremely difficult job. Yes, I did call him a noble man. He has shown it as recently as the whole snow plow debacle. He took responsibility for the sanitation department slacking off to make him look like a fool. How many people here would have been as noble as that?

I think all professions are worthy of making as much money and as much in benefits as they can. That being said, I don't think any profession is above another when it comes to cutbacks. It is the same thing I said on the other thread about the tax cap, all people are suffering and cutbacks are necessary. This does not take away from what cops, teachers, or firefighters do.

ITA.

Private industry has suffered immensely the past few years. Saying there need to be cuts is nothing personal against any field. It's just a fact - the state cannot go on like this.

That wasn't really the point of my post--just that there are other professions out there where you have a chance of being killed at work. PD and FD aren't the only dangerous jobs in America. Far from it actually.

But look up any list of dangerous jobs--pilot is on there.

I do not think receiving their pension and scholarships from other agencies is excessive. The OP obviously needed to clarify for those of us NOT familiar with the benefits because her post painted an entirely different picture.

Her original post that is...I see it's clarified now.

I'm simply stating that LIFETIME benefits, LIFETIME salary, plus free college is excessive in my opinion. You can agree or disagree.

I completely agree.

Since people apparently only read and take the comments they want to, I was wrong.

It is not lifetime salary, it is pension, which they pay into.

The college is NOT from taxpayers money. It is a scholarship given to kids of slain officers to attend state colleges only and is funded from the Widows and Orphans funds and other organizations that cops/fireman pay dues on through theyir paychecks.

If we are talking statistics, it is a very low statistic that a cop actually dies in the line of duty. There are 34,500 NYPD cops, and on average 4 die per year. That is .00001159%.

I am not demeaning cops in anyway, you brought statistics into the thread. I am shedding some light onto the topic. Statistically speaking, the most dangerous job is an Alaskan King Crab Fisherman.

Then start with the politicians and burecrat fat-cats who make 6 figure salaries, with all their other perks, cars, trips on state money, etc. on the backs of state workers - not just the fire dept/cops, etc, but all the state employees.

The state trying to take away the pensions of state employees is nothing new. My grandfather is a lobbyist for the rights of NY state retired employees - the governor and the state have been trying to rob the pension funds of state employees since before Pataki.

Cuts do need to be made across the board. That is why the NYPD are taking hits left and right which people dont realize. New hires pensions are not inclusive of OT. New hires only get death benefits if their spouse is killed LOD for 3 years as opposed to lifetime as it was in the past. The police unions ALWAYS have to give up ALOT to get even the littlest bit of a raise. There are always give-backs.

People dont realize a majority of the city's budget is now for counter-terrorism and we keep getting less and less funding from the FEDS as the years go on. So the little $75k salary an NYPD officer is making is not as much of a burden as the cost to keep the city safe from terrorist...and guess what, te cops do that too Chat Icon

THANK GOD the number is that low. That being said, nationwide I think 30+ officers were killed LOD in the month of January alone.

That statistic also doesnt account for the NYPD officers shot or injured by a perp in the line of duty. I believe an NYPD officer was shot a few months ago and the perp who shot him was let out on bail Chat Icon I know I hear about cops being shot on the news pretty often.

I thank God that the statistics for NYPD are that low. Last month, in the Miami area - 3 officers were killed LOD - in one month! All were killed while serving warrants. Chat Icon

Dumping $100 million of his own money into his campaign probably helped. And should have bought him more than the 50.6% of the vote that he got. Let's not forget than only a little more than a million voters actually turned out. Silence can be deafening.

No the families should receive some benefits but I find lifetime salary, lifetime benefits ( is that health insurance? retirement?) & schooling for free excessive.

I understand the risks taken, I understand the pay isn't like what a teacher is makingChat Icon (although my old boyfriend is doing pretty d@mn well & is ready to retire) & no I don't get what it's like to be married to a police officer. I'd like to know what that costs the State.

Fortunately not too many city cops get killed these days so it's not costing taxpayers too much Chat Icon

The lifetime benefits is because most people dont have a job that can kill them. Most people dont put on a bullet proof vest to go to work. Most people dont run into burning buildings. Most people didnt dig through the rubble at 911 or run into the towers to rescue people.

Than again, in this $hitty society, we are not even taking care of the 1st responders from 9-11, let alone the military that come home from war injured and flucked up.

Well said! Chat Icon Chat Icon

oh goodness.

If there is one thing that bugs me, it's the hero mentality of every single profession out there.

Doctors are heros.
Military are heros.
Cops, FDNY are heros.
Teachers are heros.
DNSY are heros.

People are people.

I just find all the glorifying that goes on unsettling.

Your right, when you or a loved one gets cancer, ask the guy at petco remove it, not the doctor I work for. The doctor that sat in a library for 15yrs to study how to save lives.

When

The next bombing happens(god forbid), and ur family gets killed, dont ask my cousin to revenge their lives.

When you get into the most minor accident, dont call the cops, write the report yourself. When someone breaks into your home, dont call the cops to dust for prints, u do it urself. When you witness a crime, dont call the cops, you chase the guy with the gun.

When ur house is on fire, DONT GET OUT, go around back and grab the hose. Dont call the fdny.

And dont send your children to school, u teach them, prepare them for their futures.

Just make sure you tell them to not take any of the jobs uve listed above, they arent the important ones that keep life going.

You get my point. Give me your address, ill tell my hubs to not respond to your calls.

My son stopped breathing, and it was that over receiving benefits cop that did cpr on him, not you.

People are people. We all bleed whether we work at Burger King or are a policeman. Not only do people know what they are getting into when they pick a career, so do their families. It's not easy all the time, and yes, it can be scary, but the life of one person is not anymore greater than then next.

Look, it's a career. People are paid to show up and do their job. It comes with benefits and risks. Some careers have better benefits due to the risks. Plain & simple.

How many people would honestly work at all if they didn't have to?

I just find all the glorifying that goes on unsettling.

Really? If these people aren't heroes, who do you consider a hero?

That is why it should not be a problem to make sure the officer's families are well taken care of, if they decrease these bennefits how much money are they really saving in a billion dollar budget?

I know I haven't been posting here long, but I have been reading these boards for a while. I think this may be the most ridiculous post I have ever read. No one here has been talking down on these jobs. When money talk is involved, people are going to be insulted, but no one has said that a cop, firefighter, or military person is not a hero.
