My friend does this all the time and it makes me so madChat Icon If she is driving home and her son falls alseep in his car seat she will leave him in there to finish his nap and go inside. She claims it's ok because her driveway is fenced in and she constantly comes out to check on him. My theory is it only takes a second. I have left my daughter in her carseat in the car to go unlock the front door and drop things in the doorway because I can't carry them and her in but she is NEVER our of my sight and the door is 3 feet from my car. I never actually go in just drop and go back to the car. But the couple of times I did that I still didn't feel comfortable. Now I bring her in and put her in her exersaucer and then go back out to the car.

5 minutes? No way.

I have left her in the car locked while I get a cart or put it back in the cart corral.

And I've left her in the car (again locked) while I open the house, since it's sometimes hard to turn off the alarm if she's sleeping or really fussy.

just to say something about this... a few weeks ago, in maryland, and grandfather put his 3 year old granddaugher in her car seat, then as he was about to shut the garage door, noticed that the door that led from the kitchen from the garage was open.

He got out of the car to shut the door, and by the time he got back to the car, it had been stolen, with his granddaughter in it... I saw this on tv and it was a NICE neighborhood.

Luckily the theif noticed that the child was in the car... stopped at an intersection and yelled at the little girl to get out... which she did, and right into her grandfather's arms (he was chasing the car).

But right in his driveway!?!?! how scary is that?

I have also heard of a story where a mother put her child in the car and went to return the shopping cart and someone stole her baby

Absolutely not. If I've already gotten him in the car and I forgot something in the house, I'll run in and get it quick, but never if I'm going to be gone longer than a minute

Re: since there is a debate going on on NFR I thought we should have one here

The ONLY time I leave my kids in the car unattended is when I have the car started (remote start) I have the keys, the doors are locked and I am in and out in 30 seconds or less (only at home or my moms or someplace like that). I would never ever ever ever leave them in an unlocked car with the motor running with the keys in it!

If Molly is sleeping when I get home I will go and unlock the house door and turn off the alarm so that I can bring her in uninterupted. But that is very different than leaving a child in a store parking lot- asleep or awake. That is totally nuts.

Re: since there is a debate going on on NFR I thought we should have one here

Never never never never!! Before I had my daughter, I found out my DH would leave my son in the car to run into Dunkin Donuts (Dunkin' Donuts for crissake!!) and I lost it on him. He didnt see anything wrong with it since he could see the car the entire time and it was about 6 steps from the door. After my hysterical reaction (I was pg at the time so he got both barrels) he has never done it again. The scenario you cant picture happening is exactly what could happen. I have 2 kids now and I drag them along no matter how small the errand. If its too hard to do, I wait till I can do it at another time. If its something like a shopping cart, and the corral is right there I do it but if the place doesnt have enough corrals that I have to walk too far away, I leave the cart. I'd rather be in the car with my kids when a driver who lost control of their car plows into mine rather than be watching from 40 feet away, KWIM? I have many scenarios in my head of what can happen...if you say "just this time" and nothing happens, its makes the next time easier to justify.
