1. I don't think it's going to be bad tomorrow at all. I don't even think we're going to get ANYthing. I'd LOVE to be proven wrong when I wake up. let me tell ya!
2. It doesn't look too good taking a day right after break. Not unless there's a death in the family (god forbid) or you have a doctor's note. I'd call in and get coverage for my first class before calling in the day after break.
JMHO!!! Good luck whatever you decide!

Some districts have stipulations in their contract that you cannot take the day off before or after a vacation or long weekend w/o a medical note.
I'd just make sure your district isn't one of them.
I hear you though about the roads. Where I live (N. Shore) the weather/roads are always 10X worse than where I teach (S. Shore) because my district is in a little pocket that, at most, usually gets a dusting.
ETA: Oh, I see now that you teach in the city.

I was going to ask the same question. Does your Principal/School District get mad or look down upon if you take off the day after a vacation?? I was thinking that if it was really bad I would not want to drive in. They NEVER close city schools!!!

you don't need a note. I've called in sick because of snow and I have also called in sick after a vacation. As long as you aren't the type of person that does it all the time, you shouldn't have a problem. Again though it is up to your school and your APO.

Its not like I would be calling in just because...it takes me an hour each way without snow....I think a huge accumulation would be extenuating circumstances...just what I think

Last year when we had the blizzard I went into work ( I work in Manhattan, lived in Centereach) and got stuck on the LIRR. I called to let them know I was gonna be late and they told me "We would have understood if you called in today." It totally depends on who you work for.....

Yep- I think contractually you could be docked the day before/after a vacation, unless you have a doctors note (at least, this used to be the case). But your principal may not enforce it. I'm on maternity leave now, but if I was still working I would not be going, and I know my principal would be understanding. But not all principals are like that.
